A local live poker room offers so-called "tournament style" cash games for beginners. I could not find any info on their website or online was the "tournament style" referred to. Also, can a room limit a game to beginners, and, if so, how would they define beginners? I would note that the "beginners" part may just mean that it's the lowest stakes of 1/2 whereas all the other games are 2/4, 2/5, and 5/10.

Glad this finally got relived. I think beginner thing just means lowest limits but still no idea on tournament style. Veltins, that's what I was thinking, such that it was a winner take all SNG but the chips had cash value. But then can you leave?

Another theory is that these cash games follow tournament rules to get players ready to play MTTs, but what sort of tournament rules would not carry over to regular cash games?

That's a pretty big oxymoron. My guess is that by tournament-style they mean it's a standard cash game, but with antes that rise every x orbits.

In either case, very unprofessional way to describe it.

For those who care, I emailed the poker room's info people. Got answer as to what "tournament style" means:

"Tournament Style cash game means that it is a No Limit game with a Minimum buy in and a Maximum buy in. The $1-$2 game has a $50 minimum and a $300 maximum buy in. Most No Limit Games are tournament style but they have dropped the words tournament style and just use the terms No Limit Holdem. This is no different than any cash game at a casino."

Is this right? Is the person just wrong or BSing? He makes it sound as if I should have known exactly what tournament style is, but I'd be surprised if this is true but no one on CC knows. And what would a game be if it isn't tournament style?
