Tip For A Beginner I have a few tips for beginners just startin out at poker 1. Only play big hands, do not play suited connectors in a small pot. 2. Make sure your average raise is 5 times the Big Blind, This will increase the pot size and lessen the chance of being outplayed 3. go all in or fold when under 20 Big Blinds 4. If you hit a flop bet the pot size, this will minimize their likelihood of calling and stop them calling with a draw. basically when you are a beginner you only want to be playing big pot poker, if you play small pot poker and you do not know what your'e doing after the flop, there is a big chance you will miss and get pushed off hands easily and will be unsure what to do against a bet into you when you have say middle pair.

Some good tips..like only playing suited connectors in multiway pots (I assume thats what you mean). Not to sure about pushing or folding when under 20 bbs. That seems a little soon for SNGs etc. I tend to wait until im down to 10 bbs or under.

re: Tip For A Beginner poker One thing I see beginners do a lot is fold when they've got a lot in the pot and a small stack on the flop or the turn. For instance, pot is 5 way and has $100 in it, short stack has 20 left, they'll fold second pair here. With your implied odds, you can expect an all-in of $20 more to get called four times, or raised by somebody. Both = good. You have five outs to improve, and two streets to get them, 20% chance to get two pair or trips. Hell, you don't even need implied odds, you are getting - man I've been sucking with names today... the actual pot odds to put your chips in. Direct pot odds? Hrm. I forgot Uma Thurman's name today too. Anyway, that's a big mistake.

I think the main things beginners should understand when just starting out playing poker are: - only playing good hands... In the beginning stick to "ABC" poker. It will help you get a feel for the game and over time you will develop your own style. - pot odds... Learn why it's not profitable to call a pot sized bet to chase a straight. - position... Learn why it's best to fold pocket 4s under the gun early on in a big tournament. - study your opponents... When the board has two hearts on the flop and your opponent bets big, but when the turn comes blank, does he min bet? Does he always check-raise when the board is paired? Things like this will help you play the player, not just the cards. For the very beginning beginner, I can't stress enough only playing quality hands. Of course, we all know that they don't come all the time but then you learn when to try to double up.
