The main reason you might want to drop a level would be if you want to get used to the change in hand values and the need to play more hands at a lower stake. The play is different in that for these reasons, you'll be in more hands. But the players aren't any better, just more active. If you already play a relatively active style, the transition will be easier, so there's probably less reason to drop down.

And yes... it is a different game. Defending the button & isolating weak players I believe is where it's at. Not sure if you're into reading stuff... but if so there's a good 6-MaxNL guide on the internet >>> Ryan Fees 6-MaxNL Strategy Guide (it's free... I found it quite useful). |

Playing 6max is like selling. If you think you could be a salesman, you probably can't sell. If you know you are a salesman, then you can sell. I agree the best way to find out is to move down to where you can handle the bad beats and suckouts and take it from there. Personally, I hate full table games because it is too hard to isolate a bad player with more people getting in your way before you can act. There still is a lot of camping for good hands at SH and not everyone will be LAG. I learned HE at home games and we seldom had more than 6 players so I felt comfortable right away at SH.

yay, another one away from the "dark side" but in all honesty, I switched from FR to 6max at the same stage you are thinking about. I played some (like 3-4k ?) at 5nl to get accustomed to the differences and read that 6max guide by Frees on here too. Other than that watch a few vids maybe and you'll be fine Hope that helps

re: Shifting from FullRing to 6max poker you will see a very different game than the one you have been playing when you first go to 6-max tables. more action and hand values increase dramatically especially on the cut-off and button. i would suggest to start with only a couple of tables when you first start to 6-max and begin to feel your way thru it. and yes i would drop down levels to get comfortable with the way the game is different from FR.
