Im really really wanting to play poker, and badly. Dont make much money, which is sad. I feel barred from the game. Tired of playing the watered down feelings of play money poker. I want to play for real.
Real live poker is really fascinating me, but im afraid of the bets. Ill bet ten thousand dollars on poker if I was skilled and had that kind of money to... literally THROW AWAY. But I dont. I can't throw away that much money. If poker is a "game of skill" shouldn't there be some way to start small? Hell ill play poker with like 5 bucks if I can, start there, and if im good I ought to be able to "build" from that? Right? Problem is, too many people out there make so much more money than I do. So... if I try to play with that amount of money ill be cleaned out on the first hand dealt, probably even before the flop!
Ive had some thoughts... Bear with me im new. What if there was some way to get together with people who are looking to play poker on a smaller scale. Maybe if there was some way to meet with other players at a similar income level. I see the poker tables in the casinos. Do people make contacts or get their friends/rivals together and they all sign up to use the table on a certain date/time? Do people search for people of similar incomes looking for similar amounts of betting or bankroll management? Be nice to get enough people together in my home to play it at a small scale or lower income level, but theres the law.. also the fact that I would prefer to have a few people playing the game who are just rivals or strangers, which is a bit dangerous because of cheating possibilities and violent outbursts.

If you want to play small, just play online?

You can easily build a roll from $5-$10. If you're wanting to play live poker, I know here in the UK you can play free rolls in live casinos, never played them so not sure how they work but even then you can still play small stakes tournaments which won't cost much.

If freerolls don't float your boat, then why not try playing the $0.55 cap game on PS if you don't live in US. It is a great way to start a bankroll.

If you do want to play the freerolls, then I would suggest staying involved in this forum and join the CC freeroll club. Their freerolls are a great start in building a nice BR. I started from 0 last year and have decent BR's in 3 poker sites and I have never deposited!!

GL in what you choose to do, and GL with your BR climb :)

Join CC, read, study the game, ask poker game situation questions instead of results questions. Play free rolls or deposit a minimum amount & play the micro buy ins, cash or SNG's. Focus on how you play rather than how you do financially. Like most things, this is a marathon, not a sprint. If you don't have the patience, or the discipline, find another hobby. Good luck.

I do feel I got lots of patience and discipline. I would never do something stupid like get personal with another poker player and try to seek vengence against them like some people do... Theyll go all in or make moves out of spite. I also recently watched the movie "lucky you" and the main character who... the movie paints as some kind of poker pro, loses gobs of money throughout the movie and ends up straining relationships with friends and stuff by begging for money from them to play poker... I guess he was good cuz he makes into the world series AND he wins thousands and thousands of dollars... But im always thinking "is that really a pro?". I think what he did was ridiculous. I dont care if he won 650k in the world series. The movie left me with the feeling that THAT is the fate of any poker player who "makes money" playing poker, strained relationships and financial hardship. I want to make money playing poker... but im not expecting it, mainly I want to play as ive said in the first post. Games like blackjack, pai gow, and video poker all seem so watered down anymore because of the house edge. I want to at least get the most out of my gambling when I do it.
BTW im in the USA.. so from what ive been lead to believe so far online poker options are a bit limited for me.

With regards to live poker, we chessplayers in our area used to play with each other (just like a home game) with the smallest stake. Until we discovered, other groups are also playing it.

Anyway, truly when you said joining a stake you cant afford is really a mortal sin in poker.

I'm from the U.S. too, I'm playing at BetOnline and carbon poker. BetOnline has free rolls pretty much every hour, I started playing about two weeks ago and so far I have won 8 dollars in the free rolls it's not a lot but, it's a start. Carbon poker actually sent me an email giving me 5 free dollars. You could give these sites a try. I'm still nervous of playing ring games with that money but, it's a good way too start.

I'm from the UK but have noticed a severe difference in attitudes in the videos I've watched for study. For example, if you watch the early wsop episodes there's all this almost "professional wrestling" sort of attitude with people bigtalking each other but if you watch the EPT shows most people are polite. When I've been in B&M games I tend to talk to the other players and suss out if they know anything about the game (most don't or if the do they may be pretending they don't). Anyway, back to the idea of the post. If you want to start small then make sure you have the proper bankroll for a game. I started at the micro limit holdem cash games on poker stars. The lowest level you can play is $0.04/$0.02. After experimenting with various amounts I ended up buying in for $1 per table. For this the bankroll that most books seem to suggest is 40 times a buyin. That's $40 which is reasonable. However, I'm a bit cautious and so use 100 buyins as my general rule so that I don't go bust. The thing about Limit holdem is that it's not as big in swings as no limit and can give you a grounding in play but beware, when you do change over to no limit the game is a lot different. One problem with playing the micros though is that because the money to play it isn't much people play much much looser and so it can be quite a hard game. However, if you can master these games, you'll have a thorough understanding of loose player types.

Yea they unfortunately are :( You can play in some freerolls in the CC freeroll club, as they have a few poker sites available for US players.

TBH there are so many freerolls of more value than 55c so better risk reward and wouldn't recommend stars to beginner players as well.

Well, this forum is more than good to get your bankroll rolling, once you have 65 posts with at least 30 days posting history and apply to the Club. CardsChat has freerolls for american sites too, so you shouldn't have much trouble. good luck!

I got myself into a poker website! Bovada.. or "bodog??" they call it. Had quite a blast today! Never had I felt this high while gambling. I was surprised there were tables with peoples whole chip stacks at around 1 to 2 dollars! And there bets are in the 2-20 cent range! This was right up my alley. I was getting sick of video poker at casinos. Its all touted as the lowest house edge video game and way better than slots. This is really only true though if your drinking coffee and taking your time, and not playing on a machine that holds your cards for you. And turning down the speed of the dealing if the feature is available. Holdem is so much funner than video poker because video poker is pretty much just 5 cards being thrown at you from a deck.
Before today video poker was my main game. Still probably will mess around with it once in awhile. But now that im playing a game with no house edge I feel like im getting SO much more out of my gambling experience.
I played online holdem for a good hour and a half and made about $7.50 USD! For me, who usually sticks to gambling pennies, thats quite amazing. That house edge is pretty significant, even if its like 2%.
As of right now though... I see a long long road yet. I seem to be consistently making money moving table to table. I really havent read that many books, ive only played with fake money poker for a couple months. If im going to make the big bucks or even *gulp* make it to the world series or whatever I got lots to do. The ONLY thing I care about as of right now is the fun im having! If I never move out of the nickels, pennies, dimes, and quarter level of texas holdem it will never matter so long as its fun.

The higher the stakes are, the more different game you are playing. Micro's is a totally diferent game then large stakes. If you start winning freerolls you can try the micro's and so on. Bankroll managament is also a skill, if you deposit 10 dollars, dont put it all in one tournament. You will have a higher chance of making money if you have a smart bankroll management.

There are frequent freerolls at WPN (ACR or BCP). Many per day, but there are a lot of players and the prize pool is very small.

That is the 2nd best option if you are truly cheap.

Sounds like you're off to a good start. A word of caution though, you won't always be printing money like this and you will have stretches where everything you try to do just blows up in your face. This game will sometimes severely test anyone's patience and discipline.

If you lose a bunch of hands and start feeling the urge to chase your losses, don't. Take a deep breath, walk away, and come back only when you've cooled down.

The movie you watched is just a movie. Its highly doubtful people will float you a loan to play, so dont worry about straining relationships. Play with a little cash or play freerolls. If you feel the little cash you have is too small then set a small percentage aside till you have a good amount and read up or practice with freerolls in the mean time. Positive attitude is key, and its a game, have fun with it. :)

Haha its almost as if your spying on me because this is exactly what happened. Half that 7.50 is now gone. Now as im playing the game this is very frustrating, since I am playing the game as if each penny is a whole dollar. I have a bit of an addictive personality, especially with games and online games. They can grab my attention for hours. If you've heard of WoW(world of warcraft) and how players get way into that you'll know what I mean. When I was around 14 ro 16 i'd go on gaming streaks where I play them for a real long time, entire days and late into the next morning. Nowadays I dont have that kind of time AND I am much more disciplined. Though... the personality trait is still there. And it will always take effort to yank myself away from "the game" whatever it is. But yea.. I needed to exercise that day, and I planned on going on a walk outside before work. I managed to get away from the game and take my walk. Whats gone is gone! Theres no getting it back, you got to build yourself back by playing well. At least thats what I think.. I am quite new to this game.

Someone said that it's a different game between micros and mid stakes and this is true, but if you don't work through the micros to get to the lower or midstakes then you miss on a lot of essential education. I sometimes struggle at the smaller micros these days when play just slightly larger micros but the game changes incrementally and these changes (ie less bluffing from fish as you move up) are vital to forming an understanding of the game

If you have a local casino near you or you travel to far away casinos, you can often find anywhere from $30 to $80 buy-in tournaments. In Vegas, I think there is even $10 tournaments at places where you can win several hundred dollars if you get first, second, or even third.

If you don't have a lot of money and you decide to play tournaments, just make sure not to play in too many. If you get knocked out of one early, just go home or do something else and then play in another only when you can afford to. Don't go running to the blackjack tables to make the money back up.

The best way to do poker when you don't have a lot of money is to not get addicted or tilt your money away. Pace yourself and gradually get better. The money you put towards poker should always be the money that you are ok with losing before you even start playing. Especially since you are new, chances are you are going to lose often until you get better.

Another way is to just ask your friends or coworkers if they want to get together for a poker game where everyone puts in $20 or so. You could do a Sunday football poker game or something where everyone can watch football and eat snacks while the poker game is running.
