Question About EV

Ring game:

I have an opponent that will weakly open the pot no matter what, whether he has a hand that he will fold to a re-raise, thinks are the nuts, or anywhere in between.

Say he has called a value bet on the flop, and a dangerous card comes down on the turn. If he makes his usual weak bet, isn't it higher EV for me to just call here, minimizing the pot size? I figure if I raise and he's beating me, either he's going to re-raise me and I'll fold or else he'll call and I'll lose a bigger pot at the end. Whereas if I'm beating him he's going to fold most of the time.

However, if the villain is a very loose calling station (VPIP:50+, PFR:0), would a raise be better EV?

A nice chunky raise is always good I have found for calling stations, it usually does the trick. my theory and style is to get everyone out that I can when im holding decent cards. so a good feeler raise is good for controlling betting and the stations. and if he hangs around just calling? drop a whopper raise on his stack and he will fold trust me.

This situation depends on many factors. You have to evaluate the villain and his tendancies, you have to evaluate your hand against villains range.

So for example, if villain is a calling station, and you feel your hand is ahead>way ahead, then you bet that turn coz you want full value from your hand.

If your in a marginal situation wa/wb, then you really need to be keeping the pot to a min, and looking for villains tendancies on the turn and river, trying to get to showdown as cheaply as possible.

There's also other situations you can try, like floating, bluff catching etc etc, which are all villain dependant and can be +ev.
