Question
So I have been asked recently, and honestly had no real answer, several positional and hole card situations, and how I might act in such a situation. The main one that I recall is:
two from the button, hole cards are a pair jacks. . .raise or no raise? - if you raise how much? From this what would raising high mean versus raising just a little or calling? |

It depends on how you play usually. I tend to raise the same ammount with JJ or AK or 33 regrdless of my position. That way no one as an idea what cards I have.
There is also a question is it a tournament or real money and how big your stack is and your opponents. |

i think the general consensus you would get is to raise, probably 3x-4x big blind. jacks are the sort of hand you dont really mind just picking up the blinds with because they're very vulnerable to overcards on the flop, so the main motivation of the raise is to take the blinds rather than build the pot.

re: Question poker
I tend to play J's the same way as T's and under meaning that i will usually call in early position (75%) and raise 3.5 BB in 25%, but it mostly depends on what you're looking for with this hand. I usually look for improvement meaning trips of course and i would easily fold if flop is too dangerous like 2 over cards. Well that's the way i tend to play it but i can also be raising if i need to grab the blinds.

Always raise the same, 3x the bb is good, if you do raise different amounts, do it because of position not hand strength, you dont want someone picking up on a betting pattern. If you get reraised I'd just probably fold unless its a min raise, or if its a freeroll. Jacks are eeeeeevil.

2d from the button I raise 4xBB (if I am first in) if not and someone has already raised I will probably call. If someone limps in ahead of me, I will limp too.
If I am 1st in and raise, the remaining players may think I am trying to steal. If they fold....I win......If they call.....I still have the lead and will bet. |

Quote:
1. What other action has there been before the betting got to you? 2. What are the stack sizes of people who've already put money in the pot? 3. What kind of reads do you have on the other players in the hand? There is no set in stone way to play any hand, including pocket jacks. Every hand is situational. If I'm two from the button and there's been no betting, then yes, I'm probably putting in a 3.5 or 4.5 times the big blind raise. If there's been a bunch of limping, I may even go higher, depending on my reads of those players who've limped. If there's already been a lot of action, say a raise and a call or two, I have to reconsider what to do with my jacks based on my reads. I know I didn't answer your question - I guess that's because there's no real answer on how you should play pocket jacks two from the button - or any other time. It all depends. |
