omaha hi/lo

I'm still a bit new in poker, but I'm told playing different games improves your skills.

Now I get omaha but I realy don't get omaha hi/lo
how do you win high low at the same time?

in fact I don't know when I have a low hand

keep forgetting that part

Omaha can be tricky at times and it probably best to get used to the Omaha hi games first before diving into the Hi/Lo part as that can really confuse a newer player.

Check our Strategy Articles for help Omaha Poker Guide - Part I: Why and How to play Omaha Poker - Hi/Lo (8/b)

The best piece of advice i ever heard on Hi/Lo was - only look for the Hi hand.

Basically if you think you have a good Lo hand and put a lot into the pot, you may only win a 1/4 of the pot if you have to share, so in fact you'll end up losing chips .

Also some times there isnt a winning Lo hand so the Hi will always take the chips.

Sorry if this is a bit confusing but once you begin to see the light it is a really good game.

Good Luck

You could also try the play money tables at Pokerstars. There I think the play money tables show you in the lower right corner what your best hand(s) are.

Of course, what it can't show is what draws you have, or what your opponent's may already have. Plus, I don't think it shows anything if no low hand is yet possible, so you have to understand why that might be so.

At the end of an omaha hand, you'll make two five-card hands using two cards from your hand and three from the board. The first hand will be a hi hand, and the second hand will be a lo hand. The two hands can use different cards.

Example:

You have in your hand AA23

The board comes AA345

Your high hand is (AA) from your hand and (AA5) from the board, quad aces with five kicker.

Your low hand is (A2) from your hand and 345 from the board, A2345 (the best possible low hand).

If anyone has a low hand involving five cards 8 or lower, then the best low hand wins half the pot. Otherwise, the best high hand wins it all, or "scoops."

Your goal should be to scoop pots, so you want hands that are either great high hands or hands that have the potential to win both high and low (Hence AA23 being the best starting hand).

Most players won't play a hand without at least an ace and another "wheel" card (2 3 4 or 5)

Most important points to always remember- 2 and only 2 from your hand; 3 and only 3 from the board- everytime, no exception. Lo hands must consist bof 5 cards 8 or lower to qualify.

To quote Norman Chad= Omaha is a game where, if you don't have the nuts, it's best to fold.
