need to improve my poker by reading

I have been playing low and micro NLH cash games on pokerstars for 6 month now and i have lossed over $800 dollars.Addmiting to myslef that i suck.. I have just purchased two books harrington on cash games volume 1 and the mathematics of poker by bill chen

has anyone read any of these books? if so did they help you?

No, but i think the popular ones are supersystem 2, and the theory of poker

I think harrington online six max would be a better choice over cash volume one. Also look into Sklansky no limit and small stakes holdem.
Reading is great but pick one game and stick with it. Don't play cash one day and tournaments the next and then decided to play a couple sngs.

The library is a great place to get books. also get a hud if you don't already have one. It is a great place to find leaks.

Given that you are losing at micro, it seems safe to assume that your first goal should be to reverse said situation. The straightforward way to accomplish this is to learn how to play solid, basic TAG poker, and to train yourself to actually do so. It's like building a foundation. Once you've done that, you can adapt your style as you see fit.

As for reading, it can be very helpful. But it's important to integrate concepts at appropriate times as your game advances. As I know from personal experience,trying to do too much too soon isn't very productive, and can even be counter-productive.

Instead of the books, I would suggest a training site. You are going to get more up to date content for your money than you will with a book. You can also do free trials at most of the larger sites.

A HUD is an expense, and IMO not necessary if you are not playing a lot of tables. If you are, STOP now. You need to be beating 1 table before you can play any more.

You sound like you dont have a problem admitting you are playing bad, and that is step one toward getting better. IMO the most important step. Ya cant fix it if ya dont see it is broken. Good on you for that.

Training site? No, I dont think so yet. You need to learn ABC poker and you can do that for free or with a good book.

Super System is outdated but not a waste of time, but not geared toward todays online game, and Theory of Poker NOT a beginners book at all, tho a great book to read.

I think you should read basic strategy forum stuff, and learn the basics. Solid starting hands and positional play are good places to start.

I would add that, like fletchdad, I have to admire that you recognize you are losing and are trying to change that, Well Done

But you also say you have lost $800! Please Stop Depositing!
Why risk your money when you can be learning for free. It is true that Freerolls have a lot of poor players who will call anything and can make it very frustrating to even play solid ABC poker, but it is also true that you will learn a lot playing a lot of games, without losing a cent.
While you are playing free games you can learn more about solid play, basic starting hand requirments, importance of position, probabilities and pot odds, and, very importantly Bankroll Management (BRM).
BRM is a crucial part of successful poker playing. It is even possible that you could win small amounts from freerolls and with good BRM, you could build that slowly until you have built it up to $800 and more, without ever depositing again!

The books have arrived i started reading the mathematics of poker by bill chen but decided it was to over kill to many equations and formulas nothing practical. I have put it down for the time being and started reading the other book i ordered harrington on cash games which seems alot more practical. for the time being i will just be playing the odd 1c/2c cash games with 2$ buy in till i improve, thats if i improve

on this forum.
Plenty of info and help here for free.
I would suggest you start with bankroll management (BRM).

Thanks THbonus - looking for a few more books to read. Liked Arjonius' comment. recently read Snyder's book on fast tournaments- gave me a whole new appreciation of online tourney's, but found incorporating some of his ideas took awhile to integrate into a successful game.

I have read Snyders book. Some good food for thought and a different way to approach the fast tourney structure. I think it is worth reading but read other stuff as well. He has some questionable opinions in some cases IMO. But a lot of good thoughts as well.

Crushing SSNL. I have heard a couple other people talk about this. Anyone else read it??

@OP. yea, The mathematics of poker is not light reading. I like the HoC books. He gets some flak from some camps, but they are IMO good books to read. Its his approach, and lots of good info. Also easy for relatively inexperienced players to digest. But the players at .1/.2nl will not be playing like the hand examples in the book for the most part. Harrington put his opponents on ranges, for example, because he is assuming how they are thinking about the hand so far and what they are putting him on. He makes some big folds. This is not the thinking you will encounter at 1/2nl on a regular basis. You see BIG bluffs ar 2nl. But they are not bluffs in reality. He actually thought his A6 was good to push all in with on a KQ9 board, you show KQ and the turn and river deliver T 6. He will think he played it good......

I've recently started learning poker seriously and read The Little Green Book by Phil Gordon. 278 pages where he goes through situations pre and post flop explaining which actions he takes and, more importantly, why. I've found it extremely helpful as a new player.

Great book for beginners.

Hmm this might be one of my holes, Im never too focused on one type of game at any time, I play some ring then some MTTs and back and forth. I guess I need to decide what type of player I want to be and really focus on just that for a while. You say dont play this one day and that the next, damn I play all in one day. GOOD ADVICE
