MTT all in mistake?

Okay just recently in a MTT.. mid stages of the tournament with avg. stacks of about 30-40 blinds...blinds are 50/100 ..I am in middle position and UTG goes all in for 600 (6 blinds) ..I had AQo with a stack of 5000 (50 BB) and decide to isolate all-in...until I get called by the button who has pocket KK's and bust out early...

was this a mistake on my part?

1st, being in mid position how can you say you isolated the all in when you have followers who could call also? Then what are your pot odds? At that point only 2:1--whinds up 3:1--and A-Qo IS a bit risky one on one unless UTG pushed on a hope of stealing ---was he playing tight or loose before pushing?? A little more info would help--if UTG was playing tight, then chances are hes got TPTK, if loose then I'd say you did the right thing--but it's all moot as BB had ya both--BUT w/5K, yeh, you did what I'd done-wheather it's RIGHT or not is up for debate.

he was loose-passive type...he only had 6 blinds in him and showed 58o..i was in mid position and raised all-in "hoping" to isolate..sorry about that..

now that I thought about it over and over..risking over 40 blinds on AQo does seem just to risky..well especially in middle position..and I decided in middle position I will not re-raise all in again with AQ or even with AK with over 30 blinds in my stack..

but now that said..being in the same situation with JJs or QQs ...should we try to isolate by going all-in? or just re-raise?

Why risk all your stack for a marginal hand? Raise to take him out of the picture and concentrate on seeing the flop. If the raise makes the remaining player drop out you have accomplished the same thing. Otherwise you still have chips to works with.

my move is to raise it up after the all-in, if Im holding AQ, I'd say reraise it to 1200, and see what the following do.
KK would reraise you, or push all in, then you have a decision, will AQ hold up against an unknown hand who has pushed after an all-in and reraise??? He has to have premium if he is a solid player, at least AK, and more probably QQ/KK/AA.
imo, AQ is weak in that situation.

I would just call, but if you were trying to isolate I would bet 3x his all in in the max

I like fold too. You have plenty of time and are not low on chips, so just wait not necessarily for a better hand, but for a better situation

When you have 30-40 blinds, going all in pre flop with that type of hand is never right.

You don`t need to risk the whole of your large stack in this spot. Poor odds if you think about it, betting 5000 to win 750 (600 plus the blinds).

Treble the bet to 1800. At that level, the only people likely to stay in the hand are either maniacs or solid players who have AA/KK. If you get a call and it is a solid player, you can get away from the hand and still have a healthy stack.

yeh looking back it really was a stupid play hehe ...but it was a price i paid to learn...

so same situation..if anyone is reading this what would you do in the same spot with TT-QQs?

same again, re. Egon's post, but if you get reraise you're probably against KK or AA, I guess.

Definatly would not try an all in push--maybe just a 3Xs BB raise, and Egon said the same, I think--if you're re-raised, you gotta figur them with at least K-K or better--if they call, you get to see the flop, which at this point is all I'd want to start with--I'm not looking to steal, but get the most value outa the hand as I could, especially w/ Q-Q OR 10-10.

I would advise instead re-raising to 1500, because you still isolate the player, and if you are re-raised you can fold since you are likely dominated and still have an extremely healthy stack with 35 big blinds.
