Limit Hold 'Em

Im not exactly new, but I am new to the game of Limit Hold 'Em (LHE). So, this thread will specifically be for LHE related questions.

I read that for good BRM, I should have a BR of 300+ Big Bets. So, if Im playing .02/.04 I should have a BR of at least $12. How much should I buy in for if I have 300 BBs? Also, for a new player is 300 BBs a decent BR to start with or should it be bigger? I know the swings wont be as bad as NLHE so, I think it might be ok.

it doesnt really matter what u buy-in for cause all u can lose on a single Lhe hand if it is capped at 4 bets per round, will be 12 big bets
i normally go with buying in for about 20-25 big bets

Noticed you show FullTilt as your preferred site. Their min LHE tables are .25/.50

If you check most of the 02/04 tables at Stars, 6 max and 10 seat, the 'average' stack is about .90 to $1.25

You should be fine with a $1 buy-in. Just be a little more cautious about how many times you reload in one sitting.

Big bets are twice the big blind in NL. A big bet in limit is the amount of the turn and river bet (in this case .04). $12 is 300 big bets.

300BB is the general recommendation that I've heard for awhile. Personally, I nowadays advocate this:

Starting at $.10/$.20, a 300BB bankroll is good enough. Then increase the size of your bankroll by 100 big bets every time you move up. In other words, like this:

For $.25/$.50, play with a 400BB roll (=$200). Then for $.50/$1, a 500BB roll (=$500), etc. The rationale behind this is that as you move up, your opponents will be tougher and therefore your edge smaller, and thus your swings greater. In theory you could start with a monster bankroll at the micro limits as well, but no sane player really needs more than 300BB at that level and by doing it gradually over the levels, you give yourself a faster train to move up.

This question has gone around and around for years, and will continue forever.

If you have 300 BB's to play game "x," the second you post, you are now down to less than 300 BB's. If you happen to lose that hand, you'll be down even more. So what do you do? Sit out? Leave, because you no longer have 300 BB's?

The answer to the "bankroll question," IMO should always start with the questions, "How much money do you need to feel totally relaxed and focused on your specific decisions? "How much can you lose before you emotionally feel the pain?"

The more money you have in your B-roll, the less pain you'll feel... the less pain you feel, the better you'll play.

More money = Better play!

Don't be fooled in thinking that swings won't be as big as in NL. Variance can still be wild at LHE imo. I love playing it but I suxz at it unfortunately.

The idea of 300 big bets is to act like a cushion. I can play comfortably at whatever level Im at because of how big my BR is due to the fact that I will not lose it in one sitting. Unless a) I sit with everything at a table and lose it all or b) I play way above my limit and lose it all. Its just a way of managing your BR without the risk of losing it all, its not to restrict you.

Say I have 300 BBs for .02/.04, thats $12. This means that as long as I have 300 big bets, I can only play at this limit. So, I can drop a few BBs to say to 270 BBs and still have a lot of money to play with, but I just have to stay with in my limit: .02/.04 To move up in stakes to say .05/.10, then I would need a BR of $30 if I am following the 300 BB rule for that limit. So any BR of <$12 to $29, I play .02/.04. $30, I can now play .05/.10

Jag: I know limit HE is a completely different monster and I am expecting the swings and variance to come into play. I plan on playing at the smallest limit on PokerStars and working from there. While I'd like to show a profit in the short run, Im more interested in understanding and playing the game correctly first.

New Questions:

-Whats a god starting hand range for 6-max PF? Is it that much different than NLHE? Actually is 6-max a good place to start for beginning limit players or should I be sitting at FR tables? Also, I can assume play at micro-limits are going to be very loose with players limping in or calling raises with ATC, so should I really tighten up my PF hand range because of this. As a completely basic approach to the game, would the ideal play be to just play really tight, but then get in as many bets as I can in with AA, KK, AK and any big draw/hand ive flopped? It seems standard, but I could be wrong.

-What type of BB/100 should I be looking for as a beginning player? IIRC, its something like 2xBB/100?
