Leak in my SNG play (villian on trips or overpair postflop)

How do you read trips or high pocket pairs post flop?

I get knocked out a lot when the board comes 2, 6, 9 and I have pocket QQ/KK/AA thinking I have the best hand only to lose to trips.

I also lose a lot with the same board and say A9, thinking I have top pair and losing to pocket KK.

This happened several times this weekend and I for some reason I can't get away from these hands.

My first night of SNG's I won 3/5 and came in second 1 of the times I didn't come in first.

Over this weekend I placed once, barely. I started at $50 14 days ago, got up to over $100, and am now back down to $62.

It just seemed like anytime I got a decent starting hand the flop would totally miss me. I expect it to happen for maybe a couple SNG's, but this was ALL weekend long. Then when I did get a decent hand I'd lose to sets or higher pocket pairs, see above.

I don't feel like a complete loser, I made some good all-in calls with the best hand pre/post flop only to lose on the turn/river. I expect this to happen occasionally, but it just felt like it was happening way to frequently to blame luck.

Any insight would be appreciated,
Smot

It would be great if you could post some hands for us in the Tournament Hand Analysis forum. Include any reads that you might have on any of your opponents and all other relevant information such as blind levels and stack sizes.

When you initially post a hand leave out the results so we can give you input without knowing the outcome. Review some of the current hands posted there to see what I am talking about.

Also - we have a monthly chat thread if you are ever interested in jumping in:

But Smotpoker, i will give a bit on this...
If hes still calling your bets, you know he has to have something.
If he reraises you, you best rethink were you stand in a hand.
Always raise preflop, so you know if they got a hand, are willing to call.
If your having problems, running in to higher hands, i would go back to ABC poker, it's not the end of the world, i have had days to where i would play AK, only to be killed by AA, or KK, their are the days when i play KK, only to be crushed by AA.

After sometime you may start playing to many hands, i have done that 2 times so far, i went back to playing my range again, started winning again.
High PP AA, KK, QQ, your better off all-in, or haft your stack, a 3bet will not chase off the smaller PP, esp when the blinds are low..

2 6 9 rainbow is such a dry board. If you get donk-bet or get re-raised there you should be aware.

More info on what buy-in levels, blinds level, what kind of SNG etc would be helpful. SNGs are not played deep-stacked. Any TPGK is standard to stack off, especially in turbo and multitable SNGs. If it's low blinds, fold A9 pre.

I usually only play 9/18 and rarely a 27 man SNG on PS. 1-3 dollar buy ins.

On friday I won 4, placed 2nd once. Since then I've placed in the money once. I just don't know what has changed since Friday. I was consistently making the final table even in the SNG's I wasn't winning.

Some of it is just bad luck, I've gotten some bad beats recently where I make the right call but still get outdrawn, but I can look past those without getting upset, I just don't see how I can go from playing so consistently well to getting knocked out early consistently overnight essentially.

I didn't play last night though, hopefully the night off will clear my head. I was missing every flop, hitting flops on bad cards I folded, etc. It just starts to wear on you when it happens with no breaks of good hands.

As a side note, I don't come on here much when I'm at home I'm usually busy playing. I need to remember to transfer my hand history folder to a thumb drive so I can study while I'm at work (just don't tell my boss).

My day went the same way, i hit quads, after that it was all down hill, my last shoves, with A9, AK were beat by QK os, in both games i played...

re: Leak in my SNG play (villian on trips or overpair postflop) poker

A weekend worth of playing SNGs is such a small sample you cant take anything from it. I started playing about a month and a half ago with a bank roll of $50 and there was a weekend in there when I thought, 'god these are easy, I can make the money 90% of the time and I am winning a lot of them'. During the next week my bankroll went from $80 all the way down to $35 while playing $3 tourneys. I have recovered from this and have been back up to $70 before going down and back up again. Sit n Gos are a fairly high variance game so you will have some big swings up and down, you just need to be prepared for them.
