how bad was my mistake?

Cash game with ante, no blinds. 4 handed close to the end of the night. It goes check check and I raise with pocket 5's. The last player calls and the first two fold. The flop comes A 5 9. I check, thinking it will induce a bet with his Ace if he has one. He checks. next card is a 3. I check, he bets I raise, he re-raises and I try to go all in but we have a 3 action rule that seldom gets used. The river is a 9, giving me a full house. I go all in, he folds. He had a straight A to 5.

Now, I knew he could have a straight there, or even a higher set. I didn't put him on a higher set because we've played together a lot and aa or 99 would have most likely been re raised pre flop. I didn't put him on the straight because he had to have 2 4 and again, we have played together and he is usually way to tight to call a raise with that. I figured him at that point for two pair.

I would love to hear how I should have played this hand. Any input welcome.

I don't think you made any grave errors in this hand altho the 3 action rule probably saved you from some unpleasantries as the suck, re-suck turn and river which you would have usually ended up with all the chips in the middle after the turn

possibly adjust your thinking on this player he may have changed up his game to throw you off if you have played together alot and the fact he called your raise with 4 2 means he could have had AA or 99 as well which you didnt put him on

maybe look at a way of managing the pot a bit more as in a NL game you may well have lost all your chips had the river been blank

it's a judgement call either way as it is difficult to fold a set heads up

just my thoughts I am in no way an advanced player and I am sure there are a lot more qualified people here to give you better advice

dont slow play sets odds are he didnt have an A or a 9. flops miss people i think its 70% so dont slow play and let him hit his draw for free. also dont immediately go all in on the river if you dont think hes gonna call try and get something out of him

I think he laid down his hand, because you tip your hand on the turn, you ck raised him on the turn, then tried to move in on him after he reraise, what hand does that? Set or a strait(strait would be rare but possible). In my experience only hands ck raising on this board is a set, and when river comes you move in-confirms his suspicions (you just boat, and don't care the board paired) if you had say A3, A5, 35, AK-AT, the 9 would be a bad card, and you'd play it smaller. I'd only push if Ive seen my opp unable to lay down big hands-before. If my opp is lag, id ck to induce a bluff, a suck bet might work sometimes. Also we don't know for sure were the winner A9s, kills us, by ck calling an all in on river, we protect our cards- so opp doesn't know how we play(which is invaluable). If he showed A9 on river, id muck and say i had AK, QQ, and thought he was bluffing, protecting my ck-raise image
