Hit and Run? I am gradually getting back into playing and I have developed a kind of wussy style. I play till I make at least 20% profit on my buy-in then quit. I will make an exception if I feel the table is soft. I started doing this to build up my BR, I do play aggressive but I am very tight. Is this a good idea?

In general, no. Pick a good table and stay till it turns bad or you want to quit. I guess you could leave if you get deep with a player you think is better than you (maybe he has position or whatever). A rule like you're following is not really good for your bottom line though imo.

You build your bankroll by putting yourself in +EV situations. This applies to tables as well as hands. So, it doesn't seem to make tremendous sense to implement such an arbitrary rule. All it takes to get up 20% is to win one decent pot; it doesn't even have to be an especially large one. If that happens quickly, you deny yourself the opportunity to gauge how soft that table is. If your goal is to protect your winnings, 20% of a buyin seems far too small an amount to think so defensively since it should be an inconsequential proportion of your bankroll.

I did this for a hot minute on Full Tilt. I like to sit at a relatively empty table so maybe you can pull it off at fuller tables. I started to recognize names and they'd sit out when I sat. I built a little for about a few months but then I couldn't get a game. I even tried to stop and took notes on people that hit and run on me. I eventually switched to Stars (glad I did but different tangent). People don't like when you sit down play 3-4 hands and take 20% of their stack without playing. They will put it in their notes and they will stop playing against you.

Why cap your winnings at 20%? Why not extract as much money as possible from a table and put a stop loss to your play. This way you are controlling your losses. I would think this is a very slow way to build your bankroll though. Just my opinion.

Yeah I do see ya'll's point, I just became too risk averse after getting clobbered with great hands and losing much of my BR. My last foray was playing O8 and I walked away with a 30% profit after about 3 orbits. O8 is pretty swingy anyways and the table was loose so I wanted to leave because I had been put all in 2X preflop (won low 1st, won Hi and split low on 2nd). I'll stick to Omaha Hi and NLHE and try to play min. of 10 orbits in full ring, of course if I triple up I'm leaving so I don't get fat-stack-tilty which is one of my leaks.

Ok little update, played Omaha HI on Cake tonight up 33%, got down to 4 players on 6 ring including me, after about 10 or so orbits I left. Was doing good, reading villains well, raising good and fair PF hands, re-raising whn sense weakness, etc. gradual building of stack with no big wins and only one showdown (I won w/ FH). I left because I felt my ev was low, everybody folded to me pre whn I raised and was respected with my raises. Just not a lot of money flowing, any call or raise looked to be monster, almost nittish table. So, in this case was I right to leave, when I didn't expect to make much without Monster hand Vs Monster hand?
