Help for a beginner

Hi,

A few days ago, I started playing real money and deposited $25 at PokerStars. After winning some money at the $1+.20 SNGS and losing a lot at the turbos and heads up, I have $32.55. Here are my questions:

1. How do I know if I am ready to move up in limits? (cuz PokerStars has a big jump in regular SNGS from $1 to $5)

2. When should I withdraw and how much should I withdraw?

Thanks

well i would say u only move up when ur bankroll can sustain the swings of the level that u want to go to, so u might want to move up to 5$ sngs when u have 40 buyins for that level ie 200$, so right now u should stay at the 1$ level

with respect to withdrawing, if u want to build a roll and it is disposable income that is not needed for real life expenses, then u could keep it online, if u need the money or u feel uncomfortable playing with a certain amount of money, then u should withdraw

Just keep studying and playing the lower limits until you build up a substantial bankroll. Beware lower priced sng's have donkeys all over them. Don't think you are going to bluff too many of them off a hand at those stakes. The best advice I can give is learn about position, pot odds, and stack size and how they all factor into decicing what hands to play. Remember in poker its not always about the hands you win, it is also abotu the hands you don't lose. Good luck.

1. Kinda like being in love, you just know.

2. Thats up to you. Just leave enough to keep from going broke.

I think it's important to have a well rounded poker game. If you can become profecient at multiple games you can play pretty much anytime. Anytable. Just something I was thinking about. GL2U

Ummm, maybe read Online Poker Lessons > #1 Introduction. It just goes into greater detail and gives good examples. It's geared more towards cash games, but still a good read.

I know ft better and there is not a big jump, you can go from $1 to $2 to $3. I don't like pokerstars much, so can't help there. As far a withdrawals, I would only withdraw if either I need the money or you don't trust the site, there is a fee from what I understand.

Well when it comes to bankroll management, you being a beginning player should only be using about 1% of your bankroll per buyin. Now because your bankroll is so low that would only be .25 per buyin, which is fairly unrealistic, especially on Stars, maybe some other sites have lower buyins like that. Looking at Stars I see that they have a .10 buyin SNG, but it is a 360 person SNG, so if you win then whole thing you get $8.50 and the top 36 players cash(not much, 36th only get .20), but that might be something you might want to look more into, that way you will enhance your skills and be able to play more with your current bankroll.

My rule of thumb is: MAX 5% of bankroll on any one event...prefer 2%.

Stars has $3.40 STT's as a step up from the $1.20 ones. First pays $13.50 so you can grow your BR pretty fast once you hit that level.

well you probably lost your out of frustration, tilting? Cause usually when someone goes from sng to HU is taht either they are losing money or wants to make a quick buck back, and yeah, why not, its 50/50, but if you still learning poker, just take easy with lower buy in, at 25, you should play 1-2 dollar flat, 50 then 3-4 dollar buy in, 100 5-7 dollar buy in, keep at a 10% rule if you will, cause pokerstar likes a grinder not a luck box, good luck

Well as i have said in other forums, you should only play in real money games where with whatever buyin you have made, you can afford to lose. Also to never put all your money into one game.

For you,
$20 start.
Up to $32. I would suggest playing the very small SnG's ($1 - $2) and limiting yourself to how many you play because otherwise if you get greedy and start playing $5 games in the hope of winning because of the frustration of needing to win you will lose because you play looser. Of course this will mean you play more of these $5 games and think about it. It would only take one more game for you to go into loss and then on the big scale only 5 more games to lose all your money. Just take my advice and stick to smaller SnG's. Once you are up to profits of about $100 you can then afford to play the odd $5 SnG. Be aware of your bankroll.
