EV difference in the red? So I've started a journey into online poker this week and have been running HEM. Sometimes with big pairs KK and AA the money goes in on the flop or preflop and after I rake the pot, having the best hand the whole way, I check HEM and it tells me my EV difference on the hand is negative. The only thing I can think of is because the guy had less money than I did. I don't understand EV or equity too well, so I don't know if this is even a real issue. Anyone know anything?

We could tell you better if you posted the Hand History. The only thing I can think of is you have like KK and villain has As Qs and the board is something like Qd 7s 6s. You are actually behind in this situation. Which would give you a negative ev if you got all your money in here on the flop. Edit: It's technically a "poker coin flip", but the AsQs is favored by like 2% in this example. Last edited by TPC : 6th August 2010 at 9:33 PM.

re: EV difference in the red? poker I'm at work so I don't have the hand history, but this has happened to me when I'm a huge favorite (flopping quad Jacks with pocket Jacks and busting the guy). Here is a summary of what happened in a hand. Me: $11ish Him: $9ish He raises to $.50 utg, I reraise to $1.50 with KK, he calls. Flop 3 6 7 rainbow (I think) He bets about $3.15, I raise him all in like another $5, he calls and shows 55. I'm a 3 to 1 favorite at this point, so I don't get why it tells me my EV difference was close to -4.50. My question is could it be that I just have a larger stack than them and can't truly double up?

It has nothing to do with their stack size. It's the expected value of the hand. You are either reading the ev wrong or something is messed up. Post the HH's in question and post a screen shot of the ev in HEM.
