| A lot of what you're discussing is necessary only if your opponents make it so. If you're playing a table with people who aren't paying attention to things like hand ranges, vpip, or anything but their cards really, then there's no need to deviate from a very strict, tight strategy.
Once players are aware of your tight image and adjust, then you need to start playing things like suited connectors every so often from early position. It's important to realize you are doing this not because this specific play is profitable. Even the greatest players in the world are going to lose money in the long run playing weak suited connectors oop. You play these hands so that opponents can no longer have a well defined distribution of starting hands when you open in early position. You give up equity playing these hands in order to gain some when you have a real hand and get action you otherwise would not. |
