Choosing my CG Buy-In

Hi,

I hope to start soon to play CG, and I could see many advises to buy-in to the max allowed by the table.

I thought that the max allowed was 100BB, but I can see on many rooms on micro limits, that I can buy-in many more than 100BB.

What could you advise me, knowing that I will start on micro-limits, and that I will be a new CG player.
Is 100BB buy-in ok, too much, or not enough?

100 BB's is plenty to sit down with.
Depending on your bankroll though, there is an argument for short-stacking the micro games. I tend to sit down with 50 BB's in the lower games. It means that if I catch the nuts, I have enough of a stack to extract a worthwhile amount from my opponents, while having a low enough stack to be comfortable enough to take a gamble when I feel i'm ahead or on a strong draw.

The games that let you buy in for more than 100BB's are the double stack games (50 BB's min) and the capped games. These are where you can only bet a max of $2 for example ($0.02/$0.05 blinds) so stack size is irrelevant. Some of the higher stakes players often sit down with stacks of $1000 at these tables and max out every pot for an hour or so just to let off some steam! Great if you can catch one of these guys, its an easy bankroll builder!

I'll make some tests to see where I find the best results.

Its not a case of being 'forced' to play shortie, it can be preferable on occassion. Knowing you can make an all-in call with the nut straight against an aggressive player when there is a potential flush on the board without spurting a 100BB buy in is quite reassuring.
(bad example, if alarm bells are ringing then you fold regardless. You get the idea though)
Learning how to control the short stack is a decent skill to have too.

100bb's is standard because you can get all in fairly easily by making psb's every street - so if you have a very strong hand, you can plan on getting your stack in by potting.

Deep stacks of 200bb's allow you to play a wider range of hands for implied odds. You're not going to be crazy about getting all in w a simple overpair - but hitting a hidden monster w sc's is going to allow you to play strongly.

Short stacks of 20bb's are basic shove or fold pf or on the flop.

BRM dictates the limit you play - how much you buy in for dictates the kinds of hands you will play.

100BB should be more than enough for your game. It gives you plenty of time to build your stack much bigger as well.
