calling an all-in

hello my first post
right i was one of the last 2 in a game of poker, my friend pushes all-in and i call. (he has many more chips than me) i win but then he says he should get some of his chips back because he put in way more chips than me? was he correct? we put a 20 quid bet on the result of this so any help would be appreciated greatly.

What is this a spam thread...are you kidding me. If he pushed all in and you call and you dont have enough to cover him...of course he gets some chips back. So if he had 10 dollars out (all in) and you call, and you only have 5 dollars...he gets 5 back...is this a serious question. You should pay your buddy 10x what you bet him if you really had to think about this.

bah sorry for my ignorance mr pro. its not that stupid. if he was stupid enough to go all in when he could clearly see that i had less chips than him then it would be his fault and so why should he get get any back seeing as he was quite happy to risk his full stack for my small amount of chips

umm, i'm moving this to learning poker lol

on a side note this reminds me of when i tried to teach my dad poker a couple of years ago. he was adamant that because he bet more chips than i had he automatically won the pot. this is pretty much why i don't tell new friends that i play poker.

I sort of see where you're coming from in a gambling point of view. On the poker table though, this usually isn't how it's done. Every online site and casino I've played at rules that you would both be playing for your stack only. So if you win, you double up, and if you lose, you are left with nothing. Unless you had a specific house rule that would overrule this, I don't see it looking good for you on your bet.

First off...I thought this was a spam thread, wasn't trying to be a dick. But seriously, if I had 1000 and you had 5, saying all in would be putting you all in, would you expect to win my whole 1000 with your 5.

lol my dad said something along the lines of "i would never go all in" when i tried to talk to him about poker. i immediately facepalmed

Wow..i wish it worked like that..if i could call an all in with only 50 chips & the all in stack was 5000 chips & i could take all his 5000 chips after only putting 50 in..wow..i would make a killing @ the tables..lol..
yeah..you may want to start skooling your friends /family on poker..there is a term "covered" meaning you have more chips than your opponent..therefore you CANT lose all your chips to that person ..

i don't think anyone was trying to be a dick or anything, it just makes no sense...but this is a game I would love to sit down at...

and yup, never teach anyone poker if they don't have a basic understanding of the game, its just too maddening

on a side note when it comes to live play, when you have someone covered. some people find it rude or take it too personally when you say, "i put YOU all in". i've seen a fight break out of this. So just saying, "i'm all in" even though you have your oppoenent covered a zillion times over is more appropriate.

This reminds me of old cowboy films i watched as a kid, i cannot recall what the films were called but i think they were playing stud, one player, generally the bad guy, would raise more cash than the good guy had and because the good guy could not call he had to fold, but he would bet his ranch/wife/saloon instead.
Is this just poetic license or is there a variant were you have to fold if you cannot match the bet?

Well the best way to put this,is that you cant win what you dont have.
that is how the game works you can only win what you have avalible.
that is the rules.
