advice on two hands played last night

£40 buy in double chance tourney. first hand..blinds are 100-200 I have 5000 chips ( I have not had my second lot of chips yet of 4000) and get dealt ppkk's in SB, there's a raiser in front of me who raises 600 his stack is deep having won some hands around 10000. I reraise 1800 everyone else folds the flop comes ace high (bad luck for me) but I continue the betting and raise him 2000 he calls the next card is non-descript and I check he bets 4000 and I fold, he shows me 3-4 hearts a complete bluff, did I play this bad or did he? I'm sure he never knew I did not have the ace but anyway what do you lot think?
Second question..get down to last 14 players from a 60 runner field and am short with a stack of 11000 with blinds at 800-1600 I'm UTG and get pp22's I think a bit and shove it gets folded round and the BB takes a while and calls with pp88's and hits a set and I'm out I am reasonably happy with this play as I was in the blinds next hand..thanks for all your help I really appreciate it, the sniper

First hand,
If I'm hu w KK and an Ace hits the flop, I will usually check/call the flop (or check behind in position) for a couple of reasons... I want to try to practise some pot control & also don't want to get bluffed off the best hand, & also want to get value from hands like QQ JJ TT, who might fire out a bet on the turn (& who I will have lost value from by leading out on the A flop).
I hear many players say, "I'll always lead out here.. 'to see where I'm at'" but against a good/tricky opponent... what info. do you really get when they call your flop bet? (in hopes of taking it away from you on the turn).

I'm checking in hopes of getting value on later streets from hands that would otherwise fold to a bet on the flop.

On the first hand I would have bet a little more on the flop to represent I had an ace, but as played you probably had no choice to fold. He could just have easily had an ace there as he could have had ATC. He had position, you didn't.....just shows how much position factors into the game.

On the second question...I would never open-shove UTG with 22. Since you are short-stacked the chances are that someone will call you. AT BEST you're in a 50/50 because he has 2 overs....at worse he has a higher pp. UTG with 22 is not a good place to shove. On the button shoving with 22 would be okay I suppose....but not UTG.

EDIT: Poker Orifice has much better advice on how to play the first hand. I always check the flop with a high PP when an A hits...not sure why I told you to do otherwise.

Poker orifice I like what you say but what if the opponent does have the ace? If you check / call the flop presumably your betting the turn? Or are you checking the turn and calling? I think what I'm asking is when would you fire a bet to try and win the hand? Or would you check call it down to the river? I'm a bit confused..
Secondly, I've a made pp with 22's if I do get a caller I'm 50-50 I've only got around an M of 5-6 is this such a bad play? Ok the guy had a higher pp but the odds of two pp at the same table is slim..thanks for the advice guys sorry if I'm struggling to understand...the sniper

Seriously, if our opponent calls with the top 90% of his hands, we're still an underdog. And shoving UTG, we're getting called....

When you get that short in a tournament you WANT FOLDS. You do not want to coinflip for your stack, you want the blinds. Its just so impossibly hard to get folds shoving UTG, and you should've found something to shove earlier.

Hand 1, Poker Orifice's advice is great here, as played - your fold was wayyy to nitty.
You start the hand with 5000.
invest 1800 of it to the hand preflop, which is called.
You are left with 3200 which you fire 2000 at the flop.
You get called and are left with 1200.
You are pot committed, and either should have shoved flop or called the turn - Villains A be damned.

Just my 2 cents

Hand two - Let the blinds hit you, maybe even get a good resteal hand on the blinds, or wait for better position.

2nd hand w 2-2 UTG, 7-handed table (& am assuming antes involved), +EV to shove with Top 27.5% of hands >> 55+,A2s+,A5o+,K5s+,K9o+,Q7s+,Q9o+,J8s+,JTo+,...T8s ,98s

I've got a couple of shoving charts (for MTT & for SNG/STT) which I received from some poker coaches from online poker training sites, & above answer is taken from one of them.

hand 1 - I think you should've been more cautious when the ace came up and check/call small bets, check/fold big bets.
hand 2 - I think it's best to pay small amounts to see a flop with low pockets in order to try and hit a set. nothing more...

Range varies per each position & is based upon everyone having you covered by at least 2x & another player having about the same as yourself. (in other words, if everyone is short..... as is typical in smaller field private tournaments online, then ranges would need to be adjusted).

I'll try to look around to see if I can find a link to a decent chart (the one's I have are typed out on paper). A 'good' chart gives you a decent idea/example to work from.
