Advice against tricky players

Hi there,

So I've been wondering what the best way to play against an aggressive/tricky player is. For instance, someone I know raises a lot with trash but will raise the same amount with good hands. If I only have something marginal, should I play back at him? It seems like if I wait for premium hands, he'll win in the long run

There somewhat of a contradiction in this statement - agressive and tricky - at the same time? I guess if he his both - good rule of thumb is that when they have a really good hand - they will try to trick you.
I think best thing to do is try to get a good hand & just look him up (obviously when you have AA, set or top 2 pair you need to put him all-in) - playing back may be dangerous - as crazy guys like that have no problem going allin with AQ on KJ2 board. One thing they hate is losing - so after you win a hand or two - they will be less agressive & more tricky against you

Actually - it matters a lot for strategy whether its is SNG - single or multi, tournament or cash game?

i was actually asking about cash games, but I'm starting to play low level sit n gos now too. I'm kind of wondering when I should decide to play back and when not to if I'm not really whether or not the bully has a hand

tricky? i don't think i'd note them as tricky. try to bluff or loose player, maybe maniac. i've thought it a lot but don't note them that way.
aren't we all a little tricky. isn't that the idea?
we play to win or we should, "the end justifies the means"

buckster had some good advice.
i really don't like to use those words "tricky - sneacky," sounds to much like child's play and i like to think poker is more sophisticated then that.

Like I said - I love those guys in cash games (and sometimes in tourneys also) - all you need to do is win a hand or 2 - trust me - those guys hate to lose - once you win a hand or 2 YOU OWN THEM! That of course requires you to pick up a decent hand & win against them in showdown - never ever try to outbluff them - let them bluff you when you have teh nutz

play tight agressive, meaning play only quality starting hands. but also everyone has to bluff and be "tricky" to a point. people disagree, but i think the further to the tournament goes along, the more agressive you become. raising preflop with hands like aj in early postion

it also depends on ur playing style. but just set back, and watch for multiple raises. no one has a good hand all of the time.but ive been in both postions -so i agree they will usually call back the dogs after a couple swift hits to the stack

beware the tricky big stack that does that..because it may be a trap..you know..he risks a few chips on a loose call, raising with trash to take down a pot..Hoping he gets caught so that the next time he has a hand , he plays it the same, hoping that since he got caught playing trash he will get more action..therefore win more chips with a a good hand..kinda promoting a false image ..on the flip side of this ..maybe its not a trap, just a bad player..lol..this is where instinct & reading payers would come in..

there are no set rules in poker, playing a certain way one hand doesn't mean the same thing is going to work the next time. Always change up your plays and try to confuse the "tricky dude". Play back at him, show him some bluffs and of course show him some good hands every now and then to try to make him worry about you

Just control yourself and be careful, dont play rubbish hands. Play tight and dont limp.. When you get hand, bet or raise with it. If you get nothing from flop and someone bets, just fold. But, if your opponnents are playing tightly, you should play more aggressive and steal & rob pots from them.

i think the answers here pretty much cover it. although i would add that after you win a couple of showdowns and he slows down, then you might try to steal some pots and bluff at him. just be careful not to bluff at him too much, you don't want him to revert to his crazy plays.
