| Advice 4 Beginers!! It is very important that you play tightly, especially in the begining... Like my mentor used to say, Tight is right. Which I have found is true for the most part. When playing, especially in tourneys, it is wise to be frugal with you chips, meaning don't chase every little thing that is possible for you to get. You end up wasteing away your chips awefully fast. The less times you chase hands without hitting, the more chips you will have to use in a big hand when you have the nutz... There is not much worse than being in a hand with the nutz, and only haveing a few chips to bet with. You want to bet alot when you have a great hand, and be careful with an OK hand... Another good thing to remember along with playing tight, is to pick a good table... And by good I mean loose table, you want the table you join to be as loose as possible, this will help you get more calls on your bets... Loose players are generally inexperienced or novice players... They tend to bet or call when most people know not to... So in my opinion the 2 MOST IMPORTANT points for beginers to remember are... 1.) Play tight, Tight is Right!! 2.) Find a loose table to sit at!! Good Luck to all new Players and Beginers!!! If you have a question about poker play just send me a msg and ill give you my educated opinion... |

| Sooo right! Hand selection - Much easier to play a hand where your kicker is good. Just to add.. I learnt to be tight early on as well. 2nd lesson.. Which I learnt.. is Position. 3rd lesson - Pot odds. 4th - Reading the board and putting your opponent on your hand. (Hand reading.) 5th - Playing your opponent and not just your cards. 5th - Value betting and other complex plays. That was the order of the stuff I've learnt. That's my 2 cents.. sorry if I'm hijacking this thread. But with all these basic concepts and some luck .. you should be better than break even. |

| I completely agree with you!! Turby is absolutly right, everything he mentioned is extremely important to people who want to learn how to good poker... The things he are very important, and I am glad that he elaborated on my original post because I left out some important points... My favorite point that was left out of the original thread was to play your opponent not only your cards... Because, playing only your cards could get you in serious trouble. For Example, some beginners figure if they have a flush that they automatically win the hand almost. Of course this is not true because you could you could easily still suffer a bad beat from a higher or the nut flush (Ace high flush). Jay PS. Dont worry Turby, you didnt highjack my thread... You just elaborated and added some key points... Between both of our posts we should be able to help out some people that are new to Texas Hold'em. |

| re: Advice 4 Beginers!! poker - don't start playing on Pokerstars or Full Tilt Reason: If it's your first time, you will inevitably screw a few things you can't change later (deposit bonus, rakeback, account name...). Better start on a smaller site for a few months and learn a bit more about online poker before signing up on a big site. + competition should be softer |

| I am a newbie and have been listening to my mentor, One Bourbon. I started out 6 days ago playing very aggressively in the beginning, and even though I won at first, I went through the "Money" very quickly. I was advised to slow down and save it for very good hands & to learn to pace myself. In 6 days, I have improved, finally lasting past the 1st hour & 1st break. I hope I continue to improve as I play The freerolls & the play money games. Thanks for all of your advice...I will digest all of it and become a much better player because of it. |

| re: Advice 4 Beginers!! poker Quote:
So AK,AQ is easy because if you hit an ace on the flop, you can usually get 2 streets of value. Likewise A2 is easy as you know that you can only get one street of value, so if you bet it early you are turning your hand into a bluff. Something like AT is where it gets tricky, you may well be ahead, you may well be behind but itys very difficult to determine. Its all too easy to call an extra bet with AT thinking he may be betting AX for value whereas A2 is an easy fold and AK is often an easy call. |
