Are 5s more useful than other small pairs?

A lot of straights seem to need a 5...

Play T5, as you need either to make any straight.

So I gather that the answer to my question is no, the fact that having two 5s will hinder some opponents (especially ace huggers) from making a straight is not enough of an advantage to make them statistically better than 66 or 77, for example.

No, it can make more straights then 22-44 but just as many straights as 66 -10s. As for a blocker to wheels I'm guessing? I don't think 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 0000001% is going to give you much edge lol. That is only hindering wheel draws A2-4 a minuscule amount, 66 and 77 are also hindering straights
