(The Unofficial) CC's 100 Greatest Poker Tips

I was thinking... What one thing, one tip, one tidbit has helped my game drastically enough that I will always remember it?

Then I thought... Hmmm, I bet everyone's got one or a couple.

Then I remembered some golf magazine I got back when I was playing that would have one issue dedicated to just tips. "100 Best Golf Tips" or "50 Greatest Golf Tips" or something. They would get one from each of many different tour pros & teaching pros. These issues were really great sources of reference for tuning up one's game for years to come.

I figured that would be a good idea for a thread on CardsChat. Let's all post one favorite tip here that really helped us dramatically. Might be kinda cool.

RULES:
  • Tips only in this thread. Discussion is cool, but start another thread with the tip you see here as the title.
  • One posted tip per member. If posting gets stagnant after a while, I guess another tip from a repeat member would be a fine jumpstart. (We'll try to get to 100)
  • Make it short but sweet. Simple but meaty. Somewhere between Sklansky & Dr. Seuss. Maybe 2 sentences max.
  • No repeats. That means you have to read them all before posting. Good way to learn something, too. If someone posted your idea already, try your 2nd or 3rd favorite tip.
  • Keep tips to Hold'em for now. If this thing starts to run out of steam, then maybe some Omaha or Stud tips would help.
Let's have fun with this and hope to keep to the format. I'll start...

Ace-Rag

Ace-Rag is dangerous to play in any position. Try to play only short-handed or limp the last 3-4 full-table positions pre-flop.

Trips on the flop

Rarely slow play these on the flop. The one few exception I can think is a rainbow flop, no over cards to your set, and no straight draw all on the same flop.

All you should be concerned about is your current decision. Don't think about your next hand, and don't think about your previous hand; only concern yourself with making the best decision in the current hand.

In Tarot cards, the Ace of Spades symbolizes death. Enough said.

when holding a pocket pair(any ones, but more importantly the premium ones: AA, KK, QQ) if the flop looks scary then 9 times out of 10 it probably is, be prepared to fold them.

Observe a ring game for a couple of rounds and try and get at least one note on half the table before sitting down.

You dont have to win every hand in poker to make a long term profit. Don't be scared to lose individual pots.

luck runs out. If you are getting run over by a new player that is winning just keep calm and by the end of the night you will have your money back and his.

Slight side-track, but in a standard Tarot deck there is no Spades suit - it's Cups, Batons/Wands, Swords and Pentacles/Coins... and none of the Aces traditionally mean death. Even the Death Major Arcana means transformation and change (the death or ending of a current situation) as much as literal death...

My tip would be to learn how to walk away from a table when you're behind - chasing breaking even on a bad table is an easy way to lose more money.

Don't throw good money after bad. Don't keep throwing money in the pot because you already have a put a bunch in there. If you know you are beat, just fold.

You must have a monster hand to overcall.

Heads-up, bluffs are more convincing out of first position.

Don't give implied odds with big pocket pairs. They're monster hands, but of course they can be beat and you need to know when they are.

Always play for a certain time period rather than for a particular amount as you will keep on playing if you have an amount in mind.

Always look for a reason to fold.

Otherwise, position position position, and patience patience patience will get you into the money
