Good to know about TV poker.

Hi all,

In the news section of the form there is a great article on Beating Bad Players.

Pay close note to the section on what people see on TV:

"
On television they see the pros making huge raises with trash hands and figure that this is the way the game is supposed to be played. Few of them are savvy enough to note that the players are either initiating a raise or re-raising with the trash hands. You will not see the pros merely calling with garbage hands. In addition, what they are seeing on TV is the final table that has been edited down to two hours. The hands shown on TV have been picked for their dramatic outcomes. They don’t see the boring hands where the majority of players have been folding time and time again. They also don’t realize that they are watching a short handed game that starts with six players.
"

When watching poker on TV, realize what it is before taking advice from the program. There are a lot of good ideas there, but it's not good for basing a general strategy.

I agree. I wouldn't take strategy from TV poker shows. Pros like to be very aggressive, but smart. If you play like they do on TV, you won't have the same results. The pros can scare people out of pots for just being pros.

While certainly I feel my game keeps improving from watching Poker on TV I agree that it does not completely apply to online games or other live games. You are correct in mentioning that you only see and edited version of the final table. If you play close attention to the chips counts you see they flucuate from hand to hand. This is because they do not show all the hands being played. I am glad to see someone has mentioned this.

Plus, you have to constantly change your strategy through out the tourney you are playing. You have to know when to be aggressive and when to sit back.

Thanks for posting the article.

Very true~ certainly people in tournement play must know that there are different levels in a tournement and should make a game plan to go along with that~ You can't sit around at a final table with 6 players and wait for aces since the blinds and antes are usually eating up your stack
