Day 5 of the 2005 WSOP Main Event is set to begin in a few hours and there have been a few major changes in the leaderboard sice yesterday at this time. The top 10 chip leaders are:
1st- Tim Phan $2,500,000 2nd- Phil Ivey $1,210,000 3rd- Tex Barch $1,200,000 4th- Farzad Bonyati $1,810,000 5th- Hon Lee $1,800,000 6th- Ray Sanchez $1,700,000 7th- Mike Matusow $1,500,000 8th- Stephen Marx $1,400,000 9th- Patrick Hayden $1,400,000 10th-Minh Ly $1,350,000 Other noteable chip counts after day 3 are: 11th-Greg Raymer $1,300,000 19th-John Juanda $960,000 27th-Kenna James $780,000 28th-Lee Watkinson $780,000 43rd-Dustin "Neverwin" Wolfe $520,000 76 players remain in the competition. Today the field will be chipped away until the final table of 9 playrs will be decided. The final table will then take place tomorrow and the winner of the gold bracelet, title of worlds champ, and the 7.5 million dollars will be crowned. If a few players make some decent moves today we could see a great final table on ESPN when this airs. My ideal final table from the remaining players would be: Mike "the mouth" Matusow in seat 1 (do I need to explain why I want him there?) Greg "fossilman" Raymer in seat 2 (if he repeats it will be the biggest feat in modern poker history, possibly of all time...and because Mike Matusow is there) Kenna James seat 3 (everyone likes a gay cowboy, JK...he's a nice, down to earth guy) Phil Ivey in seat 4 (he has icewater in his veins and he hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves, plus he went out on a bad beat in 2004) Lee Watkinson in seat 5 (because he's a pro) John Juanda in seat 6 (because he's good) Dustin "neverwin" Woolfe seat 7 (because he's an internet pro, has a cool website with a forum, and has had a great WSOP run) Minh Ly in seat 8 (because he and Matusow like to joke and gaff one another) Tim Phan in seat 9 (only because he seems like a powerhouse and we need a Cinderella story) Unless there are some real characters amongst the unknowns, this would be about the most interesting final table out of the remaining players, in my opinion. |

I can't get on cardplayer.com, it came from another forum, and you're right, the final table is on the 15th, and 27 will remain after today. My mistake. Goes to show you, you can't trust what's posted on a forum if you don't look it up yourself...or get it from cardschat.

There are a lot more chips in play this year, so relatively speaking he probably has been in this good of shape, but he does look dominant. If he wins this it will solidify him as probably the best all around player alive when considering cash games and tourneys

I hope he does. He was my pre-tourny pick, and all my other picks to compete are pretty much gone. Raymer has fallen off a bit, I'm not sure he'll make it through the night. Phan is playing very, very well. He has a chance. Not too many big names left at all, Ivey, Raymer, and the Mouth being the three biggest off the top of my head.

I too am rooting for Ivey, but I'm not optimistic that he will win. At times he plays very aggressively, and one bad beat basically kills you at this stage. Also, he has terrible luck in the TV tournaments. I just hope he doesn't get any AQ hands. That's the opposite equivalent of the Doyle Brunson 10/2 hand.
As for the "best player" tag, I have heard so many players referred to as "maybe the best all-around player", or "best money game player". There is only one best, so why are so many people called the best? A good case can be made for Ivey, but it can be for many others too (Negreanu 2 WPT wins, POY), Brunson (2 WSOP titles, WPT title, 10 bracelets), Chan (2 WSOP titles, 10 bracelets), and so on. Chip Reese, Howard Lederer, Dan Harrington. I don't think one player can be called the best. |

I have to say, all things considered, if Ivey does take the ME, he will be widely regarded as the best "all around" player of this era. For longevity, you have to mention Doyle first. For tournamnet accomplishments, Chan, Hellmuth, Brunson (again) and Ungar. For just cash games Reese and Greenstein come to mind instantly. But Ivey has all of the above with many years to go.

The Vietnam players are always under rated, mainly because they don't seem to get the big press the other players do. I wonder if playing cards is in their blood because there are so many Vietnamese players. I'd like to see one of them win it this year!!

"Farzad Bonyadi raised preflop and Mike Matusow re-raised, Bonyadi called. The flop came J-10-2, and again Matusow fired at the pot. The turn was a 5, and Matusow bet out $250,000. Bonyadi called that bet too. The river was the 5h, and Matusow moved all in. Bonyadi went into the tank, but eventually folded. Matusow showed 6-2 for a pair of two's and won the pot."
With that hand The Mouth had 4 million, but now he´s down to 3 million. He´s still is the chip leader. Bad news: -JJ is losing more and more. Now he´s down to 300K. -Lee Watkinson was busted: "Lee Watkinson goes all-in preflop with 9h-4d, and is called by John McGrane who holds Ks-Jh. The flop comes A-2-6 and Watkinson has a bit of a lead when a 4 hits on the turn, but when the river brings a Jack, Watkinson is eliminated." Last edited by Jesus Lederer : 14-07-2005 at 12:20 AM. |

If Mike Matusow wins, I'll be very disappointed. Can't stand the guy. Big mouth, bigger cry baby than Phil, and just an all around pain in the @ss. I don't think he's even fun to watch. He actually insults players like Raymer and that's not right. I'd rather see Phil Ivey win it and he's not my fav either (good player but not my fav).
Raymer's over a Mill again. ![]() |

I agree with you Michele about Mike the Mouth. However, I wouldn't mind seeing him at the final table. Guys like him and Helmuth make for better TV. I love watching poker, but when the guys at the final table are all quiet and dull, so is the telecast.
Matusow and Helmuth are basically the same type of person. I'd bet they are nice guys outside the game, but they just don't know how to regulate their mouths when they are losing. Helmuth is probably worse in my opinion. He almost never, ever gives anybody any credit for beating him. It's always bad luck, or he made a bad call, or whatever. Ivey isn't the most exciting player to watch, but he is class personified. I love that moment in 2003 when Freddy Deeb took a big pot from him and excitedly kept telling Ivey how much to turn over to him. Phil just said "Relax, relax". After paying up, he joked with Deeb about his shirt. Deeb said he could borrow it. The look on Ivey's face was classic. Like, "Um, that's ok". |

There is a new chip leader as of 12:47 am EST and his name is Phil Ivey!!! Still one more player to eliminate before Binons.
Number 28 has finally been eliminated and the players can get a good night's sleep before going to Binion's tomorrow. Pat Last edited by laraspal00 : 14-07-2005 at 6:55 AM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

I don't know very much, but I think he first got attention in 2001, when he won 3 WSOP bracelets. He is married I believe, about 28 years old, and plays in a lot of high stakes games. He is a multimillionaire already, and considered by some to be the best player. There are sites with player profiles where you can probably get all his info. Just google Phil Ivey player profile or something like that.

I just gained a lot of respect for Matusow. I still don't like the way he acts at the table, but he redeems himself somewhat in the interviews I have seen with cardplayer.com. He was just talking about how Greg Raymer got knocked out, and how the player that did it had no business staying in that hand. The guy kept trying to bluff Raymer and rivered a straight (or flush) to suck out and eliminate Raymer. The interviewer tried to defend the guy, and Matusow said "How about folding when you don't flop a pair of a draw?" I'm not sure I totally agree with his analysis, maybe I do, but I think it's good that he speaks that way about the game. He clearly thinks the amateurs are taking over the game, and that it isn't a good thing. Understandable for a pro.
He also commented that Ivey shouldn't have been playing huge pots at that stage, a comment that I'm sure Ivey wouldn't appreciate, but... I still don't know if I want Matusow to win it or not. Guys like him, Arieh, and Hellmuth, act like children sometimes, but it's good that they can leave that at the table too. |

Yeah, he did say that. I don't think this last quote refutes that. Basically, he was lamenting the fact that Ivey was out. I think he wanted to go up against him. He said that Ivey didn't really play well that last day, but I don't think he can really know that if he wasn't at his table. Raymer had a good interview as well with the press after his elimination. He was talking about how the tournament is with these huge fields, and that it is extremely difficult for a top pro to make it to the final table. However, he didn't think that changing the format would be an improvement. He doesn't think it is broken.
I like Raymer a lot. He is very intelligent, polite, respectful, and humble. Ivey apparently didn't want to talk to the media after he got eliminated. I saw an interview with him a couple days before that and he clearly really wanted to win this one. I think he is very frustrated with his streak of bad luck in the TV tourneys. I don't think it helps when people constantly talk about him being the best player. I think he will eventually win one, or at least win on the WPT tour. I think Kanter knocked Raymer out as well as Ivey. The interviewer said that he knocked 6 people out. As for the telecast, it will be on ESPN in October or November I think. Don't you guys in the UK get the same programming? Last edited by potsplasher : 15-07-2005 at 6:35 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |
