I wanted to discuss Johnny Chan's play. Johnny Chan, of course, is a two-time ME winner made famous as the poker icon in "Rounders."

This year he made his first really deep run in the ME, and was 9th in chips on Day 6.

He lost a gigantic pot with KK vs. AA.

Did anyone see this on ESPN yet?

IMSO, that's as easy a fold of KK as you can ever get.

Johnny 4-bet UTG, which anyone can read as saying, "I have QQ+"

Pisano 5-bet shipped 100 bbs or so on him like it was the easiest thing in the world.

Johnny can fold there, still have a great stack, and make a run to the FT, maybe.

true. what happened to Chan was nasty, i was really disappointed because i was looking forward of seeing him play more, was hoping he made it somewhere close to the final table.

Easy to say that was an easy fold when you see the hold cards.

As aggressive the players are today and how they can 4 and 5 bet pretty thin. This is not an automatic laydown. Plus we're not sure of how this guy was playing up until that hand. Lot of other factors to consider than just sayomg bad play and was an obvious laydown.

^This, personally I think Chan had a read on him based on his body language and play in previous hands but it was wrong. Great players always advocate going with their reads on their opponents.

how many people can lay down KK preflop? it's ridiculous to consider laying down KK in that spot.

plenty of people can do it. It's Day 6 of the ME, the guy shipped a healthy stack on an UTG 4-bettor with absolute calm. What range do you put him on?

no he had no previous hands against this guy. chan had just been moved to this table and gets dealt pocket kings his first hand. i dont see anyway you can lay that down with no read on the table.

he had no reads it was first hand, the guy could just as easily be shoving with lower pockets/AQ,AK aswell.

I realize we havent gotten there on tv yet but has the November 9 been decided yet?

The man himself answered the question immediately after seeing the aces, "What a fool I am, aces, 1st hand".

Why would the guy 5 bet, shove 1.3 mil more with anything less than aces or kings after being 4 bet? So at best your calling in hopes of chopping.
If Chan had just arrived at the table, even though he probably can look at any stack and get a rough idea, did he even know what was shoved at him, did he add up the numbers, nope, "what a fool I am, aces, 1st hand" Had no identity of the table, I love the guys face and blurt of "I'm all in", like oh well, what the hell, he knows Chan has kings and he knows showing desperateness to a larger stack will get the instacall. And his, what an idiot smirk after hearing the "I call" and confiriming the kings was priceless.
As much as it was poor play by Chan, the body language and tone in the "I'm all in" was well played

I've laid down KK multiple times in small buying local tournies and have been right every time. If I can do it pretty sure one of the best in the world should have no problem.

But if he's just 4bet from UTG.... come on.. think about it.

There are just times when you know the guy has Aces. This guy had Aces 100%. I mean, saying his range is KK+ here is generous. If this were button vs. BB I can understand but look how friggin' strong Chan's line is.

If anything the sizing and demeanor/hollywooding should have given Chan pause.

if his range is QQ+ like you stated and he has a 4-bet in there he is getting massive odds +EV to go all in. folding would be atrocious. if his range is KK/AA only then folding is ok but that is seldom the case.

Tough to say without being there, but some players probably adore the camera time, and would love to show up on ESPN having forced a player like Chan to make a big laydown. I don't know if Chan could factor that in, although it still seems sketchy.

Chance has 2.9 million, Pisano 2.1 million

Chan raises to 40K UTG, Pisano in MP raises to 210K. Chan makes it 430K, Pisano goes all-in for 2.1 million.

Fold.

Saying Chan should have folded here is just being results oriented.

Many players will frequently be happy to ship their whole stack with QQ or AK, as well as AA or KK so folding is ludicrous against an unknown opponent, given the amount of his stack hes already put into the pot.

Hes getting over 1.5 to 1 to make the call. At a rough guess I'd say hes probably at least 50% against the possible range.

Its just ridiculous to say the guy has to have AA.
I think almost any other top player would do the same thing.

Maybe this is why you're not deep in the WSOP ME?

Please give us the range of hands for:

1. Johnny Chan's UTG 4-bet range as a big stack in the tourney.

2. The range with which you feel comfortable instashoving against it as a fellow big stack.
