WSOP H.O.R.S.E. event....discuss

All I can say is wow. When it got to Eric, Skotty and the new kid, there were some pretty interesting dynamics.

Skotty trying to let Eric off the hook one hand, folding his Aces another hand to Eric....it was obvious that he wanted to help Eric to get the kid out...

Then the kid sticking up for himself....good for him

Skotty yelling about coooooocktails....

Eric telling him he doesn't play for team skotty...that was hilllllarious...

Was probably the most entertaining espn broadcast for these events in quite some time...

What a fool he looked like (Scotty). Berating DeMichele for celebrating then doing it himself. Then screaming about cocktails. Have another one Scotty.

Yeah, Scotty usually crosses the line...and definitly did it again. I've seen Demichele from either the '04 or '05 U.S. poker championship making a great play...so he isn't necessarily a rookie.

Scotty was getting tanked on the drinks, but a lucky dog he is. Chasing and catching the king to win. I have never seen scotty drink and talk sp much shit on a table. usually he is funny, but he shit talking helped out his game. close to 2 million, time to buy some good drinks.

As much as i like scotty nguyen, he acted like a complete douche bag at the final table. He even pissed of Lindgren... DeMichelle celebrated one hand and scotty turned into a no drunk, classless little kid after that.
I remember a couple of years ago people recieved 10-15 minute timeouts for profanity at the table (not even a final table of this prestige). I'm not saying i don't swear, i probably swear more than scotty, but if i was in that situation with the amount of respectable players cheering me on i would do all i could to look and act the part of the "prince of poker".
If this were on PokerStars i think he would have recieved a little more than a chat ban warning .

Either way i'm happy he won it (needed after last year's ME meltdown,) but i just wish he'd showed some more respect for the players and oppertunity. And i was definately more exited to see him win it a month ago with only being able to read the HH's basically and without his commentary.

Well I was certainly aware of what happened at the final table of the HORSE event and I was hoping it wasn't as bad as I'd heard. Unfortunately, after seeing the broadcast, it was worse.

There's definitely a lot of blame to go around here. Scotty obviously had a bunch of "liquid courage" in him, but his behavior was so out of line it's hard to not think he has a real booze problem. Lindgren egged him on a little bit, at least until Scotty turned on him. And DiMichele's antics early on were a bit much, though it's not like he was Hevad Khan dancing around and making monkey noises.

I have to say I lost a lot of respect for Scotty after watching this. And isn't it ironic (or maybe just sad) that he won the Chip Reese trophy when there's no way in hell that the real Chip Reese would have ever acted like that?

I watched it tonight and I was sickened by what I saw from scotty. Let me break it down a little bit so you can understand why I was so disappointed by this.

The Chip Reese trophy is one of the most prestigous events to win in all of poker. Scotty not only got incredibly drunk right after ESPN showed the whole spiel on him donking off last year and talking about how he was really going to focus this year, but he also SOFTPLAYED. I couldn't believe I saw him softplay a hand against Erick it made me sick to my stomach. Not only is that horrible for the game of poker in general, but how disrespectful was he to the memory of Chip Reese. Berating waitresses and players, binge drinking, cheating (softplaying is cheating), flashing cards around in a hand, and having layne flack come to the table to give him some love in the middle of a hand. I was sitting there like WTF. It was sad to watch an award named after not only one of the best players ever, but one of the most respectful and kind poker players ever be won in such a matter. Never again will I play any of the Scotty Nguyen annual tournaments in Oklahoma again, and I hope no one else does either.

I could not believe what an alcohol-fueled butthole Scotty was. I guess that's why I enjoy the $1/2 tables in Las Vegas -- just have a little fun playing poker without most people getting out of line.

I was sad to see Scotty play himself out of last year's Main Event. I guess I don't feel quite so sorry anymore.

Honestly Scotty does NOT deserve the title and trophy even though he did win. It was just so gross to see a poker player, especially a PROFESSIONAL POKER PLAYER, act like that. I am glad this final table aired on national television so everyone can see how disrespectful Scotty was to the other players.

I used to like Scotty and enjoyed watching him on television, but after what I just saw... I absolutely hate him. And I can't believe they didnt give him any penalities for 1) showing his cards to the audience and 2) using prophane language towards other players AND to the staff (when he was yelling for cocktails). I would have much rather seen Lindgren take this down. At least Lindgren shows class at the poker table.

Scotty's play last night was alright, but his attitude totally stunk! He was drunk, there is no question about that.

I always thought they had tournament rule where you were penalized for foul language.... Maybe that is just the ME?? I have seen it a couple of times.

I did enjoy Eric's remarks and the way he was silently and kindly getting under Scotty's skin.

I thought it was against the rules to consume alcohol while you are playing.

It's "The Prince of Poker". If he wants a drink he gets a drink.

I was laughing most of the time. Nguyen was berating DeMichele who's game I really like, and Lindgren was laughing. Then Scotty goes at Erick and the conversation those 2 had was hilarious.

What was the exact quote Erick said? I ain't on team Scotty, Never have, never will be? Something like that.

Scotty was an absolute idiot at that final table. His antics were 10 times worse than that of Dimichele who apoligsed for his early celebrations. The folding of the AAxx in the Omaha Hi/Lo to Lindgren was unbelievable, out of order completety. It shows how bad he was when Lindgren, who initially was laughing with him, turned on him.

What a disgrace to the memory of Chip Reese.

I went through all the same emotions watching that, and thinking Scotty to be a total ass. His 'baby' has always irked me almost as much as that infamous shark.

However, maybe it was pure genius on Scottys part;

1st, look and act like he's out of control - he looked like he was a drunk, and played like he was a drunk
2nd, look like he's on TILT - he reacted like he was a drunk
3rd, piss everybody off - follows from being a drunk
4th, get somebody else to go on TILT (he finally got to Eric)
5th, take it down baby!

I would prefer to think this was a calculated meta-game attack Scotty made. Maybe he deserves an Oscar?

I can't believe how much self-restraint Eric showed until he reached his limit, and I enjoyed how he acted after he reached that limit. I also enjoyed how he snubbed Flack as he was leaving the table. Classic!!

DeMichele is too nice a guy and was understandably intimidated by Scotty's rants. Instead of sparring with Scotty, it would have been really easy for an experienced antagonizer to push him over the edge. Of course, he might have needed a body guard leaving the casino.

I have to wonder what it would be like if Matusow was at the table instead of Eric. They'd have to broadcast the $50K HORSE tournament on Court TV!

I hope this kind of behavior and lack of penalties isn't going to become a 'standard'.

Gold drew no penalties for his table violations in the ME in his run for a bracelet, and now Scotty. Inbetween those, the presence of media coverage has seemed to encourage so much more bad and outrageous behavior at the tables in the name of 'recognition'.

They say the squeaky wheel receives the grease, but in these cases the seriously defective wheel needs to be replaced with a decent wheel, imo.

They strip Olympians of medals for bad behavior. Maybe this would be a way to send a specific message. But then, poker and gambling has a bad reputation in many circles and the media thrives on it, not likely to change anytime soon. Watch for more to come and scenes like Scotty's going untamed will be Ground Zero.

How about long after prime time and only on the adult channels ... ... Maybe poker shows will have to go before the media content review committee for ratings ... G, PG, R and X.

Yeah I heard reports that Scotty was horrible during this event and I really didn't believe it since he's always come across as a nice guy, a fun act, the life of the party poker type in his interviews and TV appearances.

I was just stunned last night watching this event, pretty much echoing what everyone else in here has written already. My respect for Scotty Nguyen is totally out the window. Gone. This is a personal respect thing, not professional, he has proved time and again he is one of the best. But his antics and cursing, and berating of that kid was just ridiculous. The kid was stoked to be on TV and honestly was not even 2% as bad as most kids are on TV but for Scotty to just go off on everyone from the players to the dude bringing him beer was horrible.

Count me out of the Scotty Nguyen fan club. Next time I meet up with some poker press people I know I will ask them about it, and if Nguyen has had any comments about this event since it's happened or aired. I would think if he cares about his public persona (which is pretty valuable in terms of sponsorship deals) he needs to immediately apologize, explain how he's not going to drink (you can always blame it on the booze), etc etc.

This should be rebroadcast on one or more of the ESPNs at least two more times between now and Tuesday.

I must admit that the televised show last night was entertaining. Much the same way I have to watch COPS every week - it's entertaining. Like several others have mentioned, it looked like a home game with an open bar. I found the trash talking between Scotty and DeMichele was very fun to watch - from an entertainment prospective - but certainly didn't belong in such a high profile event.

Let's face it - COPS is entertaining - for what it is - it will never win any high class awards .

I'm not certain, but I thought I saw (several days ago at least) that ESPN360 had posted previously aired episodes of the WSOP, so that might be worth checking out.

I don't have much new thoughts to add, but like a lot of other people, I was very disappointed in Scotty's behavior. Up until seeing the final table broadcast, I only knew that he had won the H.O.R.S.E. event. But wow, Scotty's behavior was definitely a sad thing to see and not the way to honor the memory of Chip Reese.

From what I've read, once it got down to the final table it took nearly 6 hours between Glantz being eliminated in 4th to Lindgren's 3rd place finish. Given so much time, I wish that ESPN could've showed more hands that didn't involve Scotty's poor table manners.

I like to drink beer and play poker but in moderation. After 4 or 5 I quit. I wonder how many Scotty had. I have always kept my composure doing so. What scotty did might change the rules of the WSOP. No alcohol is probably what the commitioner is thinking. If there i 1 . Does anyone know? But i've never thought of poker having a good influence on kids ,if so Scotty would be fined. I think it was Erick who said after he was knocke out that it was the beer tht won and not scottie.

Officially anti-Scotty unless he makes an apology.

well I finally got to watch the first part of the espn broadcast this past weekend. Scottie wasnt that drunk yet but was working on his buzz. Will try to catch the 2nd part soon, though I did see the clips on youtube. What's interesting is that he can get so drunk and still play all star poker. Possibly it helps his game ? Cant wait to see the entire part 2. Thanks for the heads up.

btw, I did hear he apologized... he said "sorry baby" ... lol

I was completly disgusted with Scotty's demeanor at the table. more than his drunken antics at Demichele was the chip dumping he was doing to Eric. I don't understand why he was not penalized for the language ( I thought they did that? ) I commend Eric on the way he handled Scotty, Heck he was even rooting for him after he was knocked out.

Congrats Scotty on your win as a poker player you earned & deserved it

As a human being you've got a long way to go towards being the classy guy everyone once thought you were
