WSOP $1K rebuy brings the LOLZ

Table Orange 19 is in a bit of all-in frenzy today as their table continues to just fire all in preflop to see what luck may bring. Their first big all-in was with four total players, and two hands later there were six all-ins preflop. The hand immediately after saw another five-way all-in. This time one of the losing players didn't rebuy.

On the six handed all-in, the hole cards were , , , , , and 5-3. The board came giving Ben Sabrin 20,000 in chips when his held up to make a straight.

Thats why I hate rebuys. Only thing I will play is the $3+R on pokerstars and thats only when im in a straight mood to gambool.

Yeah, but let's keep this in perspective. To most of the players in that tourney $1000 is like $3 to you and me.

The rebuy period is over now, but apparently one table (with Sorel Mizzi, Mark Vos and a few others, not the one mentioned above) made a total of 50-something rebuys. Just one of the players was into the game for well over $20K in rebuys.

man if anyone gets a video link to this that would be sooo great to watch. watching n00bs do it for their $3 cracks me up, watching pros do it for a grand would be LoL.

IIRC, last year Daniel Negreanu spent $53K on this event. And didn't cash.

I cant see how someone can get 51 rebuys and an add on, even if they went all in and lost every hand, surely there isn't enough time before the rebuy period ends

Just researched it - he rebought 48 times. My work blocks most poker links, so I can't give one, but a google search for "daniel negreanu rebuys' brought tons of articles from last year with that info in the description.

They are 60 minute levels at the WSOP. And they go for 2 levels before the rebuys stop. Plenty of time to get in 51 rebuys.

This year he spent significantly less than that (12, maybe), and he made it to the money second in chips.

Keep in mind that there's a method to his madness too: what he's doing is dumping a huge number of chips onto his table, which he intends to win back.

The quantity of chips on your table puts a practical limit on the number of times you can double through - if people have only made a few rebuys and there's only, say, $20K total chips on your table, then you can't expect to build a stack much bigger than say $15K. Absolute best outcome is you knock everyone on your table out and take the whole $20K. Whereas if you've put in a ton of rebuys yourself, suddenly there might be $50K getting about on your table, and you've got a much better chance of building a dominating stack.

One year in particular Negranu used this strategy and came in third - making a sizeable profit on the tournament, even after making about $30,000 in rebuys. Other years he's bombed on the first day though. Seems this year he's found the happy medium.

I'll put this in here so I'm not clogging up the board with a new thread for every WSOP hand that makes me laugh... because lots of them do, and this is one. It's from the $10K mixed-games championship that started today, coverage from PokerNews again:

2-7 Triple Draw:

After the second draw in 2-7 triple draw, Jan von Halle flipped his hand over and showed the 3-4-5-6-7. Johnny Chan saw this and bet to put von Halle all in. Von Halle was confused as he didn't realize there was another betting round. He called anyway and couldn't quite understand why the pot was shipped to the two-time Main Event champion Chan.

Von Halle must not have realized that straights count against you in 2-7 triple draw and was eliminated because of his mistake. Chan took the pot with a 8-low.

OK, deuce-seven isn't the most common game, and not everyone knows it. But surely if you're going to pay $10K to enter an event where it's played, you'd at least learn the basic rules?

Then there's the even funnier part: they've been rotating games every eight hands, and this one happened almost six and a half hours in. What has this guy been doing, folding pre-draw every time deuce-seven rolls around until now?

You would think, but again, since $10K is like $10 to most of these folks, I guess he thought he could skate through most of the stuff he didn't know.

There was another hand in this tourney where Dario Minieri was playing Razz and betting an A 10 10 into someone showing a A 5 6. He lost a ton when his opponent showed down a 65 low.

Makes me wish I had a disposable $10K right now...

But even then: the game had been going six hours, and they're changing games every eight hands. So he must've seen a few dozen hands of decue-seven, surely at least enough to know how many betting rounds there are
