World's most overated player?

Let me nominate Isabelle Mercier. She's a woman, she's pretty, she's on the front of every magazine (inc this months Pokerplayer), she's sponsered by pokerstars, and ..... she aint won shit! Would anyone have heard of her if she wasn't a looker?

Isabelle "nomercy" Mercier's pokerstars rating on tournamentreporter.com...........

Wait for it...........

0.23%

(a 2) - 1,078,232th out of 1,080,748. Tournament fees paid (by who?) = $3,900. Tournament winnings = $1,171 (30% return).

She is pretty though.

She's an up and comer though so maybe that's why she's gettin attention (in addition to her looks). She did win the WPT Ladies Night (whatever that's worth) so as of right now there is a lot of hype but that's about it. In my opinion, it has to be Mike "The Mouth" Matusow. If he didn't trash talk all the time, would he be as well known in the poker world as he is today? Would he be on FSN's "Learn from the Pros"? Granted, he's won a few tournaments but overall, he isn't as great as he's portrayed to be.

Rob, although i hate to admid it ( cause she is my favorite player and i love that woman ) Isabelle seems to be just like you say overrated. She has only won that tournament and is constantly getting kicked around on other events ( doesnt make day 1 ) . Maybe like it was stated, she is a coming up star, and i hope to see better performances from her in the future

I nominate Good old Phil "I can dodge bullets baby" Helmuth. Plays good cards but just wines and complains too much. If someone beats him in a hand he always thinks it is unjustified as if the player didn't know what he was doing. I have never seen him give anyone credit for any hand.

Chris Moneymaker was the same as Isabelle. He wins the big one but I haven't seen any other wins or placing in the money since. Maybe he should be the overated one.

What is everyones input on our champion "Moneymaker" , Do you people think he is overated and that he is indeed , a fluke ?
Because after the WSOP main event win, i havent seen him win anymore big events or bracelets , atleast that i know of ? and i see champion "Fossil Man" making it deep into most tournaments he plays . If it wasnt for the huge bad beat he got on the 2005 main event, he could of maybe, just maybe, gotten back to back championship wins

I think that Moneymaker and Raymer are the most overated players. Since 2003 win in the WSOP Moneymaker hasnt done very well at all. If you have been watching the Poker "Superstars 2" then you can see that he cant compare to the real superstars. And as far as Raymer goes, I saw his 2004 win and he got so lucky on his win. I do give some respect for raymer for beating over 1300 players, but the final table was very lucky.
Those are my thoughts about the "overated players". What do you think?

Overrated player?

Two words.

Phil Laak.

Not only was his only major win a freeroll but his nickname (Unabomber) is as offensive as his antics.

I disagree about Raymer, the fact he made it towards the end the year after his WSOP win is more then can be said then a lot of players (better then any of us so far ;-))

However I completely agree that Moneymaker is overrated.

Since everyone is putting Ramyer and Moneymaker in the overatad catagory, will this years WSOP winner get the pokerstars jinx as well and not do well in the future.

I'd agree with the Isabelle Mercier pick. There's a lot to dislike about Phil Hellmuth, but I don't know if I could call him overrated because of what he's accomplished. The same could not be said for Ms. Mercier.

Talk about one hit wonders. How about Robert Varkoni, the WSOP main event winner the year before Moneymaker. That guy completely dropped off the map.

I don't watch a lot of poker so I really don't know who Ms. Mercier is, but I do agree that Moneymaker and that Varkoni guy have not kicked up much dust since there conquests. How about Annie Duke? Good poker player, some say she is riding coat tails. She is a sponsored competitor, but now a days Brianna has a sponsor. So I think Annie gets added to the over booked as well as the over rated.

I saw Mercier in Ladies Night II, and I personally thought she was a snot. I was pleased to see Jennifer Tilly take it down. Since we're on the subject of ladies...I don't think Annie is necessarily overrated, at least she has the success to back it up (she does have a few WSOP bracelets, just not from the Main Event).

I have to agree with Moneymaker being overrated. Yes, I did see him in "Superstars 2", and if I recall correctly, he was alway knocked out first. Annie Duke at least defeated a table of pros after the 2004 WSOP. (I think it was called Tournament of Champions?)

Moneymaker is high on my list of over-rated but I know a few others I'd put but I do not want to get angry hate mail

Don't know her

But she sounds like I'd bang it!! I would like to know if she pays entry fees herself or someone else does and she try hard enough.

Overrated

Chris Moneymaker, for sure. First name that came to mind. Gotta agree om the Unabomber also. Lots of hype, but what has he done lately?

I like Howard Lederer, but he seems like he has been in a rut lately.

With the big poker popularity explosion, many pros have not adjusted to the influx of new internet-style gamblers. Ha - let them play an online freeroll!

Raymer definetly isn't a fluke... and he's probably one of the nicest people to watch because of his extremely great table manners.

I dont think Chris Moneymaker can be classed as overated. Who is it exactly that is rating him highly? I think general concensus is that he was an above average player (obviously) that hit (very) lucky one time. He's sponsored because of the "he did it, and so can you" effect.

I wonder how many of these "pros" are actually making money from poker, and not the associated sponsorship / media attention.

Lots. Raymer is definately not overrated. He's a very solid player and I'd hate to be at the same table with him. Anyone who has won more than one wsop is not overrated let alone 9. I don't know if moneymaker even entered anymore major tournaments so I'll pass judgement on him for now. It is odd however that his only major poker finish was the wsop.

I believe Moneymaker had a final table appearance in the 2004 WSOP in Pot Limit Hold 'Em or something like that.

I believe Moneymaker is invited to the TV events because of name recognization not because he is highly rated as a player. He did after all help to popularize the game with his WSOP win. Given my demonstrated level of skill at this game I have to admit I feel a bit silly calling professional players overated, although my ex-wife has pronounced me highly qualified to discuss this general topic. Helmuth is a brat but 10 bracelets are 10 bracelets.

When did Raymer win 9 main events, let alone 9 bracelets?

I would agree that M&M are both overrated. Moneymaker has been nowhere since 03' and Mercier should go back to being a host instead of a player.

Raymer has 8 of those side tourney bracelets over the last 2 years. Some people count them and some don't. I think if it is not from the main event then it's not the real deal.

I saw Chris Moneymaker win a $10 + $1 rebuy tournament on Pokerstars, which for those of you who have played these things know it's a very hard tournament to win. Therefore I don't think he's as overrated as everyone says he is, you all are just jealous that you can't win anything lol.

Matt Lessinger in "The Book of Bluffs" and Tom McEvoy in "How to Win No Limit Tournaments" have some VERY complimentary things to say about Moneymaker. Both say that Moneymaker's WSOP win isn't the fluke a lot of people say it is and that he's a top notch player.

My bad...I had no idea he was even around the scene until he won the big shabang. Goes to show how much I pay attention.

It depends what you mean by overrated. I take it to mean that their recent success doesn't warrant their media exposure. As much as it pains me to say, Doyle Brunson is overrated, at least as a tournament player. Yes, I know, Back to Back WSOP champ but that was 27 years ago. He's not in the top 10 for sure, but he is the most recognizable face in poker and he is a legend.
Clonie Gowan is another one of those overrated pretty faces. Another overrated face that isn't so pretty is Mike Matusow. Obviously pro caliber but that mouth of his is what has made him famous, not his skill. He's a Helmuth wannabe without the talent.
