| When you can "live with" losing Let's face it - we all hate losing, especially on or near the bubble. But is there such a thing as a "good beat?" Last night, I was at the final table of a 45-player SNG (top 6 paid) when this happened: Full Tilt Poker Game #6909150627: $5 + $0.50 Sit & Go (52505613), Table 1 - 400/800 - No Limit Hold'em - 2:11:31 ET - 2008/06/21 Seat 1: dizbmikuni (9,220) Seat 2: groovejockey (8,923) Seat 4: bammer25 (3,978) Seat 5: danvanan (5,520) Seat 6: Finisher1367 (13,410) Seat 7: kendawg10 (18,984) Seat 8: cheesy bread (1,805) Seat 9: mudnot905 (5,660) mudnot905 posts the small blind of 400 dizbmikuni posts the big blind of 800 The button is in seat #8 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to danvanan [4d 4h] groovejockey calls 800 bammer25 has 15 seconds left to act bammer25 folds danvanan calls 800 Finisher1367 folds kendawg10 calls 800 cheesy bread folds mudnot905 calls 400 dizbmikuni checks *** FLOP *** [4c Jh Ah] mudnot905 checks dizbmikuni checks groovejockey bets 800 danvanan raises to 3,200 kendawg10 folds mudnot905 folds dizbmikuni folds groovejockey calls 2,400 *** TURN *** [4c Jh Ah] 5♣ groovejockey bets 800 danvanan raises to 1,520, and is all in groovejockey calls 720 danvanan shows [4d 4h] groovejockey shows [Js Jc] *** RIVER *** [4c Jh Ah 5c] 6♥ danvanan shows three of a kind, Fours groovejockey shows three of a kind, Jacks groovejockey wins the pot (13,440) with three of a kind, Jacks danvanan stands up *** SUMMARY *** Total pot 13,440 | Rake 0 Board: [4c Jh Ah 5c 6h] Seat 1: dizbmikuni (big blind) folded on the Flop Seat 2: groovejockey showed [Js Jc] and won (13,440) with three of a kind, Jacks Seat 4: bammer25 didn't bet (folded) Seat 5: danvanan showed [4d 4h] and lost with three of a kind, Fours Seat 6: Finisher1367 didn't bet (folded) Seat 7: kendawg10 folded on the Flop Seat 8: cheesy bread (button) didn't bet (folded) Seat 9: mudnot905 (small blind) folded on the Flop I bet big after the flop after seeing the flush draw, and figured I still was okay after the turn. I felt great about getting all my money in on this one. When groovejockey flipped over JJs, sure I was upset - but I also had to respect the fact that I was beaten by a better hand. In thinking about this hand, I also wonder if there was any way to get away from this, post-flop, considering the chip situation. Would any of you have backed off after the opponenent's post-flop call? |

| this hand what you would call a cooler there is a word for "good beats too" and actually i dont think i could of got away after flop just because of how small % are that the other player has a higher set but it obviously happens sometimes and maybe if this was live and I had a very good read, possibly. |

| Like Bob said. Set over set will often cause you to lose you stack. It looks like you played the hand right, got in cheap, hit your set, got your chips in, just happened to run into a higher set. And post flop you were committed so no I wouldn't have backed off. Well played just unlucky. |

| re: Poker & When you can "live with" losing With such a small stack in comparison to the blinds (4.6 M) your preflop decisions should have been down to all-in or fold. So here are the two most "likely" outcomes:

| Geting away from the hand postflop is imposible imo. I thing its more about the prf decison, your M is geting low and u need to make a move soon and double up so a case got be maked for pushing here instead of the limp. I might also exually consider folding this with the blinds at this level. |

| Thanks for all the responses. I suppose I might have folded in that situation, but with a limper in front of me, it seemed like the perfect situation to see a flop and maybe hit a big hand with trips. I'm not sure I would have shoved with 44 at that point, as I wasn't the first one into the pot, and would likely have been called. With 2 or 3 M, I would probably go all-in with that hand, but here I felt I could last one or two more orbits waiting for a better opportunity. Just to show how luck evens out, here's a similar hand that happened in another SNG I just played (took first in this one): Full Tilt Poker Game #6914989710: $10 + $1 Sit & Go (52557891), Table 1 - 20/40 - No Limit Hold'em - 15:26:50 ET - 2008/06/21 Seat 1: seki2001 (3,520) Seat 2: bamnet (1,990) Seat 3: crazyroc (1,395) Seat 4: DARTHP (1,490) Seat 5: danvanan (1,335) Seat 7: Kabodog (770) Seat 8: MARIEEVE81 x (1,465) Seat 9: TakeMoney101 (1,535) Kabodog posts the small blind of 20 MARIEEVE81 x posts the big blind of 40 The button is in seat #5 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to danvanan [Kh Kc] TakeMoney101 folds seki2001 folds bamnet folds crazyroc folds DARTHP calls 40 danvanan raises to 120 Kabodog calls 100 MARIEEVE81 x folds DARTHP calls 80 *** FLOP *** [5c Qh Kd] Kabodog checks DARTHP checks danvanan checks *** TURN *** [5c Qh Kd] 3♠ Kabodog has 15 seconds left to act Kabodog bets 400 DARTHP folds danvanan raises to 800 Kabodog calls 250, and is all in danvanan shows [Kh Kc] Kabodog shows [5h 5s] Uncalled bet of 150 returned to danvanan *** RIVER *** [5c Qh Kd 3s] 2♥ danvanan shows three of a kind, Kings Kabodog shows three of a kind, Fives danvanan wins the pot (1,700) with three of a kind, Kings Kabodog stands up *** SUMMARY *** Total pot 1,700 | Rake 0 Board: [5c Qh Kd 3s 2h] Seat 1: seki2001 didn't bet (folded) Seat 2: bamnet didn't bet (folded) Seat 3: crazyroc didn't bet (folded) Seat 4: DARTHP folded on the Turn Seat 5: danvanan (button) showed [Kh Kc] and won (1,700) with three of a kind, Kings Seat 7: Kabodog (small blind) showed [5h 5s] and lost with three of a kind, Fives Seat 8: MARIEEVE81 x (big blind) folded before the Flop Seat 9: TakeMoney101 didn't bet (folded) |

BTW, my wife folded a small set in an MTT where I was dealing one of the other tables, when the flop came something like A83 rainbow. Her opponent went all-in, and told her, "I have you covered." She thought that meant he was trying to tell her he had a better hand than she did. My guess was he had something like AK, while she had a set of 3's. She went out of the tourney a couple rounds later, and told me about the hand. I just shook my head and said, "You never fold a set. If he's got you beat, you're supposed to go broke." I hope she will remember that lesson for a long time to come. |
