I think this is more of a bank roll management and feel for your game, rather then a set amount of hours of actual play. The general rule of thumb is 300 big blinds and then move up a step. However, in my opinion, if you ever move up and are not comfortable, step back down.

ya im thinkin like vollycat, u need to improve ur bankroll first, chris ferguson's BRM guideline he used for going 0-10k was not playing in n e MTT for more than 2% of his total BR and not playing in n e ring game or S'n'G for more than 5% of his total BR...this will help u from getting in over ur head and staying away from tilt n such things. i dont think n e time limit should be set, cuz some people can play for like a year and still be a bad player if they do not try to learn the game and how to play successfully.

When your BR can handle it and when you're ready.

Have at least 300BB to move up in limit and 20 buy ins for NL ring games.

Play where you, and your bankroll, are most comfortable. I hop around in limits/ tourney buyins all the time. I have "niches" where I concentrate a good % of my play, different ones for different sites, depending on my BR situation per site, but I'll move up, or down, depending on how I'm feeling on a given day, how long I intend to play, oh, lots of factors.

I only rarely go out of my "comfort zone" though, and then only for a specific purpose, like a really juicy tourney coming up.

1. 100x the full buy in for new level.
2. 20,000 + hands at current level.
3. 8+ bb/100 win rate at current level.

^^^ these would indicate to me that it is time to move up.
