When to move up a level in ring games

Following the 5% rule and starting at .01/.02. When would you move to .02/.05. Considering the buyin for this game varies between $2-$10 technically you can move up when BR is $40. Mine currently at $111.91. I wasn't thinking of going up until i could buyin for $7 (with 20 buyins)

What would you do?
Wait till you have the table minimum and move right away
or
Wait till you have the table maximum and move
or
Do you have a specific price to reach before moving?

I'm starting to think its ok to move when u have the minimum, that way i'm not stuck on .01/.02 for so long.

Anyways, interested to read ur feedback.

The rule is 20 max buy-ins, although for some reason on stars, 2c/5c lets you buy-in for up to $10. I've always basically said it's the same as 2000 big blinds. I think you should be fine with $100 at 2c/5c but if you're buying in for $10 that may not be so smart. You should be fine moving up when you have 20 $7 buy-ins, but in the future it will be max buy-ins. At 5c/10c the max is still $10 and you should have 200+ before starting. 10c/25c is 500+ and 25c/50c is 1000+. Hope you do well enough to have to utilize these latter rules.

I would look at this rule in terms of your buy-in amount.
The idea behind 5% is that you don't have too much of your bankroll at stake at any one time, so you can weather downswings without decimating your bankroll and also avoid playing scared.

I always buy-in for max anyway, so for me it is 20*max buyin, but if you always buy in short you could adjust accordingly

I'm sure all the rules made up for bankroll management are great and based on fine math but I don't see it.

I deposited $25 and tried to play the .02/.05 tables. I found out pretty quickly that people were less likely to get bluffed and would basically play any two cards. So I wasn't winning like I should. Plus the FPP were few and far between and I needed 250 to clear a bonus.

So I decided the best thing for me was to play .05/.10 with $3 buyins. This lowers the possible loss amount at any one time, of course it restricts the amount you can win too. I've decided to move up to .10/.25 when my bankroll reaches $75 which would have happened long ago except I keep playing tournaments and not winning.

I'm close to that level though, hopefully will reach it soon. Then when I move up to the next level I'll buyin at $6 until $150, then $10 and keep going up in levels as I get to $200.

Like I said, I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything wrong, according to the established systems but it's working for me. So far.

It all depends on your comfort level with the money you're playing with.
Personally, when I started playing online (albiet with a lot of cash experience) in october 07, i went staright into 12/25 NL with an initial stake of $50 as I was happy to reload from my regular finances if necessary and couldn't face grinding out at the micro levels.

Now that my bankroll is circa $2,000 i'm a lot more careful as I can't afford to refinance it if I lose big

Good, but I'm assuming this is expendable money. When you bust will you have money to deposit left? If this were all your poker money and if you busted you'd have no money left with which to play poker, then yes that's completely wrong. If you have more if you run out, this is fine because your BR is actually much bigger than $75. Good luck.
