When to finish a Session How do you guys know when enoughs enough? Not that I lose all my money. But I'll be up say 15 bucks ( I play low-limits) then I'll stick around for another hour and lose half of my profit. What are some good guidelines, if any, too calling it quits on a session. Do some of you call it quits at a certain time of the day or at when you reach a certain amount of profit for a session?

When I get tired/bored/tilty, and/or when the game gets too tough. I will often enter a session with the aim of playing for a set amount of time, but I rarely stick exactly to it, one way or the other. I'm not a great believer in setting stop-losses (or stop-gains). Poker is one long session, and finishing up or down in one particular session shouldn't affect your mood as long as you feel you have played optimally. As long as the game is good and your mindset is still optimal, it makes no sense to leave if you're a certain amount 'up' or 'down'.

re: When to finish a Session poker I use a website called checkyourbets.com (Don't worry its not an affiliate link or anything) and looking back on the stats from when I was last playing probably for cash I was usually playing 4 hour session, with very mixed results. It's hard for me to set a time-limit, because I either have very limited time (Whilst at Uni) or plenty of it (Weekends and Holidays). I'm also with Dorkus on the +/- money situation, if your on a good roll at an easy table why stop? I can see when going under, but not over.

Usually the minute I finish clearing a bonus on a particular site, I'll leave whatever tables I'm at, unless I'm winning big there. Otherwise, I generally leave when I feel that I'm not making good decisions, or when I get bored of a game (say, Omaha/8) and feel like playing another cash game or a tournament. In other words, no set rules on time or winnings/losses for me - but I don't like to sit on the same cash game table for more than an hour...but that's just me.

Generally if im on a good roll at a table ill continue to play it, esp if the competition is poor. I tend to call it a day if i manage to have over 50% of the total chips at the table, and the other players are attempting to isolate me. Otherwise donk on dude !

I think setting stop-losses are only good for players who don't have the discipline to recognize tilt and keep emotionally stable. If the player is the type who gets frustrated with losses, focuses on what he is down, and tries to get agressive and "make it all back at once" stop losses are needed until the player learns restraint. Of course if stop loss is used as a way to limit bad play, then it really should be more of a "stop bad", where someone recognizes they are on tilt, playing bad, making lazy calls, and stops their current session. The benefit of this is that they may already have been on a rush and up $100, and turned around and lost $50... sure they are up for the session, but they need to take a break or fix their "mindset" before they go on. |

re: When to finish a Session poker I set a time limit when I start playing. Then I just play till my times up and call it a night. Of course I don't always make it for the full session. If I'm on tilt and just cant seem to pull out of it then I give it up for the day. Or when I'm so drunk I'm passing out in my computer chair(last weekend), thats always a good time to give it up.
