Whats the deal with folding when you could just check

I notice a lot of people folding when they need to do nothing but check. Am I missing something there? Whats the point of folding if it costs nothing to stay in the hand? Nearest I can think may be that they are playing multiple tables and don't want the distraction.

Need to know a lot about the situation where you are seeing this happen before this question can be answered.

Small stake tournaments are about all I play. And the big blind bettor usually. It'll go around the board, and maybe one other person will get into the pot, plus the small blind, it gets back to the guy and he folds.

Some people just have brain farts and do it. That said I've seen it in a very specific situation when it was being checked down and the person didn't want people to see what (garbage) they were speculating with.

Sometimes I fold if I got a hand like 6 high and there are 5 of us going to the flop and it's checked around to me, so I don't get in trouble trying to triple barrel my way to winning a small pot.

I have done this myself. I think it usually occurs when a person is multi-tabling and several tables demand one's attention at once. A dialog box will pop-up asking the player if they really intend to fold their hand when they could simply check and they misclick on the "Fold anyway" button.

Perhaps they are impatient. Or they play more than one tournement and don't want to get interrupted in this tournement. I have also sometimes fold at one tournement just to concentrate fully at the other where it seems that I can win a big pot. So yes when it's a freeroll and annoys you at any kind you can fold garbag without checking, just to buy some time.

Some people may not want to show the other person the hand they played. If they checked and then the guy behind checks and there's a showdown, everyone can go to the hand history and see what everyone had

Illogical as it may seem, some people will fold to conceal their playing hand. I wouldn't do it personally but that's about the only reason I can think of.

Possible reasons

1) On tilt / in a hurry and want to speed up current hand
2) To conceal hand
3) Because they think they should fold should somebody bet, and dont want to get tempted into calling
4) They are a moron

Actually by doing this, your hand is more obvious then just mucking it at showdown lol.....

In casino, I've seen people do this also. When I sat next to this guy, I asked the guy that he could've just checked and just fold when others bet. His reasoning for doing it was "I don't wanna catch something in the future and cost me anything." I just told him "oh, right. you got a point there. I never thought about how much I've lost from future streets." just to keep things social and not make him feel like I'm questioning his play but at the same time, I was curious why people did this.

I personally disagree with this because if someone makes a bet and others are faced with the decision to whether call or raise, I like to put slight pressure on them that I'm still left to act and that I'm capable of check-raising and possibly squeeze because I've done it so many times. But if I just fold rather than check/fold anytime I don't have a hand on the flop, then they can have comfortable decision since they don't have to worry about me.

Another thing is, whenever I just fold if I dont' have anything from big blind but when I don't fold, then people can instant narrow range of hands on me since people will assume I would've folded if I had complete rags from big blind that's been checked around.

But that's just me.

The REAL reason players fold with an option to check----- their hand is so bad they don't want anyone to witness it.

^ I've mucked 32 suited like that plenty of times. But there's no point bluffing @ that with 3 high depending on how many people are in the hand because someone most likely hit that

ive done this before, i wont lie.

Say im in the big blind and this fish keeps limping and bets every flop. On one hand i can lead out all the time, or check raise and pretty much polarize my opponants range.

Alot of the time im fine just folding oop if im HU verse a fish in that situation,. If there are no antes then its not as optimal to screw around with those other players. Im holding 8 2 offsuit and flop is TQA facing a UTG limp. im ahead of small PPs and a small chance he has connectors. He is very likely to have 89+ and i wont shake him from this flop

I think they are just trying to not get in trouble at all costs. They apparently know that they have a problem to fold hand like fourth pair when they hit it on the next street and this nonsense is what they consider to be the best way to avoid it. Of course it's silly... they are throwing their equity(even small) away. Maybe I'm missing something as well, but I can't think of more reasonable explanation of this.

Someone did just this (folded when he/she could have checked) and I was holding a Royal Flush.

I admit, I once folded when I could have checked. Pretty dumb move really. Another time I was going to do this, but thought what if they have a really nice hand, I would like to see their cards if for free, why not. I ended up winning that hand lmao.

So now when a time like that occurs, I think let me not fold and just go ahead and check. They may be holding a Royal Flush and well I would like to see. It is not costing me anything.

Other than that, I have folded to speed the game up. Maybe I was short stacked, turbo tournament, or I did not want to show my ugly cards.

TY Cat for the picture.
