What are some people thinking when they play hands?

This is a head scratcher from yesterday. AAJ flops, player 1 bets player 2 calls. 4 on turn, player 1 bets, player 2 calls. J on river, player 1 bets player 2 folds. Player 2 types "I hope you had Ace cos I folded Jack". So he calls to the river then folds when the only card that could possibly help him flops!??????????

Either (a) he's talking crap about his hand and really had KQ or something, or (b) he's really, really dumb. Could be either.

Without knowing more, think I'd vote for (b)...

No, he called bets down to the river then folded, when the river card can only have strengthened his hand. I didn't understand what he was doing, but I dont think he was lying when he said he had J. He obviously thought opponent had A, and J had made him (opponent) full house, but I don't know what card he was hoping to get when he kept calling?

I think I know that guy.

He's the same one that calls, raises, checks then folds. It called regressive play syndrome.

One thing I am wondering here is if you're player 2 and you have say JT, how do you play it? I'm assuming this is limit, so I'd probably raise the flop and fold to a 3-bet (one of my basic limit strategies is raising for information while the bets are cheap, a 3 bet here invariably means an Ace, a flat call could be KK/QQ/KQ/Jx, whereas if you flat call his bet you learn nothing), or check/call down to the river if my raise on the flop is flat called (perhaps betting at the river if the turn is checked)... does this sound reasonable?

Rob,

You are assuming this guy is actually thinking. Although, he did have fold. Why I don't know. If he as hoping for the jack on the river. Why fold. Maybe he thought the other guy didn't have the ace and had a jack and a better kicker. But, then again why ask if the winner had an ace. Yeah, you definitely have a head scratcher there.

These are the types of people I don't like to face.

He may have been playing a stooge by writing what he did, or was he serious. I would give him credit for a drawing hand this time but if he did it again then I would wonder what he is doing on the table.

Obviously there are 2 chances:

1.- He was lying: If he was lying, probably he had something like pocket pair (lower than JJ), and when in the river came the second J, making in the board two high pairs, his pocket pair was useless so he folded.

2.- He had the J: If he had a J, there are two chances:

a) He was chasing a flush. Maybe he had Jx suited. You didnīt tell if the flop was rainbow or not. If it was, forget this option option.

b) His calls werenīt to chase something. Maybe he called in the flop because he thought that his opponent tried to represent it (so up to the moment his Js were good enough). Then he called in the turn because he thought that his opponent was trying to bluff or had something lower than his Js (maybe a lower pocket pair). But then in the river he finally gave up assuming that his opponent had the A, so the last J was useless.

Well, thatīs all i can deduce without knowing too much information (opponentīs style, size of the bets, etc.)

ahhhh Probably just tryin an amatuer trick to try and make people think he was holding the nuts. I have been know to occassionally throw something in the chat window to try and get a response when I am in the midst of a major bluff. Occassionaly works but generally just a waste.
