What is considered good in poker?

Hi guys,

I'm not a big online poker player, but I frequent live play a lot. More then occasional/recreational players for sure. I would consider it a hobby/passion/past time/income, etc.

I've been playing since I was 17, but in casino from 19 to now (23). Started playing 2/4 limit, learned the fundementals, stepped up to 3/6 NL (only game offered at the time), then found my niche playing 1/2 NL.


Anyway, I've been seriously keeping tracking of my outcomes since about September 2008, when I decided to form my bankroll again (i've exhausted my previous rolls for personal reasons). I've been keeping detailed records from Febuary til now. I've been able to formulate fancy excel spreadsheets and graphs and I'm really wondering whether I'm doing as well as I think I'm doing.


I'm just wondering what is considered "crushing" your current game? According to my data, I've been averaging about 8 big blinds per hour, which equates to $16/hour. I've built my roll from scratch and over the course of 9 months its at over 10k.

Would this be considered a good return? I know there is a bit more to be made but i think I should max out somewhere in the $20-25/hr range given consistent stellar play.

Any opinions?

I'd consider myself quite seasoned and a regular at my local casinos, I have good tilt control and good money management skills. My style is tight/aggressive. I'm pretty heavily rolled for my limit/style (50 buy ins @ 1/2NL). I'm still fine tuning things such as value betting and proper bet sizes. Maybe take a shot at the 2/5 NL game?

Timmy I would consider, being up over 10k in the period of time you have been playing is Very Good. Keep up the Great play and thanks for sharing and please update regular as you are a very good resource. Thanks Jimmy

winning over a sample size of 30k-50k hands in a limit is usually considered to be beating that limit. At least 10k sample size is a must tho.

It is time to get a new game and crush that one. It seems slow and stady is ur game and with those returns your killing the stock market. Maybe if u take some more risk there might be better returns in for you. Gl and see u on the felts.

Where I am from, I guess I'm lucky because there are several casinos around that spread a couple of the NL games. My game time is limited only to 1/2NL but there are usually 1-2 tables of 2/5NL, but I know or have played with most of those players and would not want to sit with them all day everyday with the occasional donk floating in and out.

However, at the 1/2NL games, most of the casinos spread about 6-7 tables, so I have some choices as to which players I want to sit with.

Well, from the data I've recorded from Feb-Jun 09, I've averaged only about 70hours of play time a month. However, in my life, I've must have several thousand hrs of experience at 1/2NL and have been a winning player. Of course this is impossible to prove because I don't have any records, but my hand samples definately would be in the many thousands.

Table selection is as important for a live game grinder as it is for an online grinder. If the 2/5 games are reg filled where they are just moving $$$ between themselves and losing to the rake due to the lack of tourists then staying at 1/2 with good table selection is the right play, IMHO.
