what are buy ins?!!?!

no this isn't a joke, what do people mean when they say they won 3 buy ins, or lost 5 buy ins, like this quote i took from homerphobe,

"It was only after looking back on my game after losing 8 buyins or so and asking..."

are we talking tourney buy ins, or cash game max buy ins? because i really suck at managing my winnings properly and always just end up losing it the same way i won it, be it a SnG or a cash game at the same level.

my favorite format of play are sit n goes, so instead of depending on them for my entire BR, should i just go and win the buy ins at the cash games so that i have a steady stream of buyins?...

they are proabably refering to the maximum buy in for cash games. so at the $.10/$.25 NL tables where the max buy in is generally $25 (and in fact are generally refered to as $25 tables for this reason), if one had lost $50 they might say that they have lost two buy ins

A cash table/ring game is $0.15 / $0.25. When you click to join, the maximum chips you are allowed would be $25. That is called the "Maximum buy-in".

Strong players usually plonk down the maximum, so if you lose 3 buy-ins at these tables in one session, you have just lost $75.

Likewise, if you win 5 buy-ins in the session, you have won $125.

I hope this answers your question.

Yes, yes some people DO do that. When I first started, I had the view to building up cash (grinding) at the micro tables and then using the winnings to take a shot at the Sunday Million or another similar $200 buy-in tourney. But when it came to it, I just didn't have the balls to lay down the cash. But I will one day...I will.

if you really want to avoid 'pissin' the profits away', don't bother with the tournaments. they're fun, i know, but not the best value for good players
