Recently I watched some videos on Sammy Farha and something struck me. Why is he having a cigarette in his mouth while playing. Is it supposed to look cool with it hanging there when he's not gonna smoke it. He even said it that he does not smoke. I know he's a good player and all but I just can't take him seriously here lol.

I've not seen, or heard of, Sammy Farha but from your description it sounds to me like a talisman sort of thing. You know, same as a 'lucky' hat or boxers etc.

He obviously feels more comfortable with the butt dangling than without. I doubt very much if coolness considerations enter into his thoughts.

Either a lucky charm, intimidation or superstition.

Of course it is the case of smoking or not but if you are in public and you aim the camera then it is better to refrain from smoking.

He quit smoking, and did that to help quell his urges.

He doesn't do it any more.

I honestly feel from my limited experience that it is something similar to your lucky jacket for a game, lucky pen for an exam, lucky chick at the bar and such.
Sometimes, if you engage in something unusual it might be a way of hiding tells too!

If you have seen him play sometimes he does play like a donk lol. Playing so loose no wonder he's called a rich gambler.

Sammy Farha is the coolest guy to watch playing televised poker............I think the the unlit cigarette is for his image though......he tends to go for a slick, cool, smooth look.......

that's a good point, I'm also thinking about the 2004 champ, greg R. with his reptile eyes like glasses, I think Sammy does smoke, but to respect the no smoking rules of many casinos, including how the poker room does not want smoking, he doesn't light up. Thoughts and opinions?

Ya think? He must be really addicted then to have a cigarette with him all the time.

Think he has a habit of smoking, addicted to smoking.
but No smoking in casino
therefore by chowing the cigar, think he taste the flavor of cigar leaves...he feels like he is smoking.

there are some of the smokers I know doing this in waiting for train, airplane, etc etc.
If not, they feel uncomfortable.

...because he's Sammy Farha, he's a boss, and he can do whatever he likes? :p

The answers provided above ring a bell for me too. And it's worth nothing that he's a somewhat superstitious player in other ways too, if you watch him on some of the old series of High Stakes Poker (won't show his cards before the board is run out, etc)

Farha's unlit cigarette is his trademark look and considered good luck. In fact, he doesn't smoke, he's just superstitious. One time he was getting stuck pretty badly and his friend suggested they go outside for a smoke break. Farha said he would prefer to stay and play, but his friend put an unlit cigarette in his mouth and said "keep it there then until your luck changes" and Sammy did.

Almost all of these responses are embarrassing. Smh.

Maybe if he switched to a hoodie, shades and ear-buds he would be a respected player ... ;)

----------------------

try wiki...

Ihsan "Sam" Farha (born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1959) is a professional poker player. He is best known for finishing as runner up in the world series of poker (wsop) main event in 2003 and has won three bracelets at the WSOP.

Farha moved to the United States after the Lebanese Civil War broke out when he was in his teens. After settling in Wichita, Kansas in 1977, he attended the University of Kansas. He graduated with a degree in business administration and moved to Houston, Texas to work with his brother. Farha first played a game of poker a year after moving to Houston, and won several thousand dollars. He quit his job in 1990 to play poker full-time.

Farha's biggest tournament finish was in the 2003 World Series of Poker main event, where he finished second to Chris Moneymaker for $1,300,000. On the second day of play Farha lost a major pot to Barry Greenstein leaving him with only 10% of the average stack. He was considering leaving at this point and was talked into staying by Greenstein. He lost the final hand to Moneymaker after going all in with a pair of jacks on the flop, only to be called by Moneymaker who had flopped bottom two pair.

In a rematch between Farha and Moneymaker a few months later, organized by pokerstars, Farha won.[1] They played against each other again in a special "grudge match" during 2011 World Series of Poker, which was won by Moneymaker in best-of-three format.[2]

Farha also finished in the money in the 2005 WSOP main event, as well as the 2010 WSOP main event.

Farha, after winning the $5,000 Omaha Hi-Lo (8 or better) event in 2006, skipped playing the event the next three years. He then played it again in 2010, after it was increased to a $10,000 buy-in event. He went on to win it, so while not winning the event consecutively, Farha did win the bracelet both times he played in the event.

In 2012, Farha finished 11th in the 2012 World Series of Poker $10,000 Omaha event, for $43,076.

Farha has also finished in the money in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship, once for $75,000 and the other time for $125,000. He also has three cashes in World Poker Tour events, for a little over $100,000.

Farha co-authored a book "Farha on Omaha", which is a detailed guide on Omaha poker strategy. Farha intersperses basic strategies with his own personal strategies, so players can not only learn the game, but learn the style of Farha himself.

Farha is working on a book, tentatively titled Luck is Not Enough, a reality TV poker series, and a video game. He is a spokesman for Harrah's casino in Las Vegas. He has appeared on the GSN series High Stakes Poker, in seasons 1-4. Farha also made a cameo appearance in the 2007 film, Lucky You.

As of 2010, his total winnings exceed $2,800,000 in live tournament poker, although he tends to primarily play in high stakes Omaha cash games. His nine cashes at the WSOP account for $2,540,043 of those winnings.

*******************************

It would be interesting to know how much he has made in high stakes games.

I haven't smoked in over five years now, but if dangling one in front of me would help bring in millions ... excuse me ... I have to rush out to buy a carton ...
