ugghhhh no more limit poker

After playing NL for a while , I decided to try Limit poker because I had bought that book 'Small Stakes Hold'em' thinking it was a NL book when its not. Man I have only played limit 2 days and so far I am hating it. Today I lost money with every high pocket pair. I had some idiot call my raise with 23s and ended up witha straight. Theres so many suckouts in limit , its ridiculous. Even when you raise or reraise, fish still draw on something as dumb as bottom pair and limit seems to favorite this type. At least in NL you can make them pay by betting the size of the pot on the flop.So much for reading the entire book and then applying myself to limit only to loose money when I almost always win in NL. Does anyone feel the same way about limit poker?

I agree with Paulson. Though it is true that you can lose with good hands more often in limit poker, because "fish" tend to call anything down the river, you kinda have to de-value big hands like that. Sure you should be raising/re-raising pre-flop, but watch what your opponents are doing. If they're just check/calling until a flush card hits, or straight card then raise/re-raise.. it is OK to lay down Trip Aces.. because most likely they just hit it.

In limit it really is about the long-term results. Just be aware of how your opponents play, and use that to your advantage.. make good decisions, and in the end you will profit.

I've actually found pot limit games to be right up my alley. I tried the NL games for awhile and had some success but I became aggrivated by not being able to play hands due to all in fools. I can completely understand your frustration of not being able to drive players out but for me, the ability to play more hands has helped me improve my game.

Overall I guess I just had a really bad day with limit but I probably will stick with NL. Do you guys stick with a certain limit or do you go back and forth between limit,PL and NL?

So far I've tended to have more success at Limit - it does change the relative values of hands - speculative hands are cheaper to try to get, so they can be easier to play, while made hands lose some value because they can't force people off the pot. You get more suckouts, but it works fairly well in Omaha Hi/Lo, because you'll get people drawing to 2nd best hands, while you're drawing to the nuts, so you then get lots of action when some people are drawing dead. I'd recommend trying it if you fancy having a go at limit again (no good for using the tips from your book, though).

I like NL, but limit poker is great as well. It cuts down on people bluffing, and these days, people bluff way to much. If I have decent (but not great) pocket cards and someone goes all in, you are most likely not going to call assuming that they could possibly have something. You do not want to go out early in an online tournament due to a bad read.

In a casino environment, or home games, you can look at the people and gets reads from them, which is very hard in online games.

Limit is a different game than NL. Draws are more prevalent, because often times people have the correct odds to go for them. That guy who was a "fish" in your opinion just because you saw him play 32s, may have been correct to be in the hand and bust your big pocket pair.

Like some others have said, limit also cuts down on bluffing. So you will need to have solid hands and be able to get off hands when you are beaten.

Limit poker is the best game out there. Here is why all new players hate it's because they watch it on tv and want to play they see bluffs and fall in love with the thought of making it big. When they cant win at nl they go to limit. Here is what gets them most people that play limit poker have no idea its not a game of raise your aa on every thing. Lets say you have aa your under the gun and have 6 people in the pot its board is ks,qc,3d, what do they do they bet and one of the people raise 2 callers and mr pocket rockets raises right back, They call next card is ts, and he bets and gets raised. So he raises or calls but the point is You need to know when your hand is beat. In that hand the poor guy could have lost 10 bb with one pair when there was two pair and a straight in his face and he could not see it. Dont stay in it and lose then complain that its rigged. If you play your pot odds and dont Be the fish with the rockets with a crack in them a player can make a killing.
