Which type of game is best for a beginner to learn basic fundamentals.

Hello, I'm interested in learning how to play poker. I have read some of the articles on this site and will soon start reading some of the recommended books. Also started playing online in free games. I'm willing to do the research necessary to gain an in depth understanding of the subject.

My question is: Is there a type of poker game which is more suitable for a beginner to learn the basic fundamental concepts of the game? I'm referring to game types as in Omaha, Texas Holdem, 7 Card Stud, etc.

Any suggestions on a step by step guide to progressively learn and approach the intricacies of the game.

Holdem is the easiest game to learn, but the hardest to play.

No Limit Texas Holdem is by far the most popular, and it probably makes sense to go with the majority.

I`d suggest that a good way to learn the game is to play STTs (Single Table Tournaments). You can find cheap ones at a buyin of a dollar or two on most sites. The beginner tournaments at Bodog are especially good for the purpose.

An STT has the merit that your maximum loss (if things go badly) is only that initial dollar or two. The STT also gives you an opportunity, within the space of an hour or so, to play Full Table, Short-Handed and (if you do well) HeadsUp, as well as playing with both low and high blinds. A pretty rounded introduction to most aspects of the game, in fact.

There are hints in the Articles section here at CC (tab at top of page) on playing STTs.

I would definitely say Limit Holdem is the way to go if your just learning the game. You can always give NL a shot once you are comfortable with the game of holdem itself. I just feel that for learning purposes it's probably smarter to learn at the limit tables. Less risk, and I think your probably gonna learn some real good habits along the way before you jump to the NL game.

I would highly recommend "Getting Started in Holdem" by Ed Miller. Then "Small Stakes Holdem" by Ed also, once you get a good grasp...
