Turbo or Regular? I have been wondering which game speed is better – the Turbo or regular…? I am pretty much a tight-passive player; however I have noticed that I turn into a tight-aggressive player when it comes to the Turbo game. If I was to stay passive, before I know it – blinds would eat me up. During a Turbo game I tend to open the range of playable hands, as there is no time to wait for top of the line hands. If you don’t build up you chip stack early enough, it becomes rather stressful and hard to survive during the “Bubble Time”! I have not really figured out yet which game format is better for me, but I do believe that turbo games have helped me (passive player) to open up my game simply because I am forced to and it’s a good practice as well. What do you prefer?

Hate to admit it, but I'm much of the same, tight passive. And I know it's not feasible to expect to be a winning player playing only monster hands, and hoping to trap the aggressive with smooth-calling/slow-rolling in the off chance I flop the nuts. I'd imagine a turbo forces the issue, and might actually 'retrain' you in a positive way, especially when you go back to a 'regular' game. Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing from the more experienced in this matter.

generally i think it depends on the stakes. at the lower $1-$10 range i think that turbos are more profitable due to the type of players that like to play them. a lot of the time when playing turbos some of ure opponents at the table are playing multiple tables, usually playing TAG rather then LAG. from about the $10-$16 sitngos i think its a genarally TAG but with more LAG mixed in. once u get to the $20-up sitngos its almost all TAG play. in general turbos are good from the $16 and below range i would say. with more donks goin out early and increasing ure odds of cashing without doing much. above the $16 dollar range u can expect to be fighting for every chip.

I agree with Kid. In the smaller buy-in games, turbos is usually the easiest and more profitable. When you get to the higher buy-ins, it gets alot tougher and the quality of players is waaaay better and it is safer and better to go into a regularly timed game.

re: Turbo or Regular? poker I say Regular, if you are a tight player aa kk qq ak aq type... if you are reckless and loose then i would suggest turbo... but i dont like the turbo it forces you to make bad decisions and puts you in a difficult playing positiong because the blind go up so fast... good luck in whichever tourny style you try.

i find that both have served me well. in a regular turny i can play slow and wait for quality hands. and in a turbo i play less than quality hands for time sake. and what i see in my game is this i have a bigger chip stack i regular turnys because i see the flop more often with less than quality startering hands. it mixes up my game and keeps other players on there toes.

tight passive you would definatly be better at regular...if you are being tight and passive..you want more time before the blinds go up..its a no brainer personallly i think regualar is better for ANY style of play...never hurts to have more time on a blind level the turbos hurt certain styles of play though

re: Turbo or Regular? poker No mater what, I play regular...even if I do play LAGish or TAGish it play regular for one simple reason...more time, I know ppl that can pwn turbos(Philthy) but with my playing style...usually tight, I need more time to get hands and that's about all

I like regular, I seem to place higher in them. I don't mind turbos, but for some reason I find myself having a hard time winning them. I can place ok, but winning seems to be less often for me. Super turbos I have a real tough time and pretty much stay out of them, I have a hard time kleeping up with the blinds. Even if I play loose I find it difficult to stay i the game. I have tried playing them tight which is pretty much worthless. I also tried playing loose right off the bat, played starting hands like I was playing short handed, I had a little more luck, but just couldn't crack the money spots enough to make it worthwhile. ~H

I like the regular speed game as opposed to the turbo games. In the turbo games if you are not catching any sort of cards you will be in trouble. Turbo forces you to be over aggressive and some times make dumb moves because of the fast pace that the tournament is moving at. When playing in a tourbo tournament I find that the all-in move must be used more often and wisely to have any sort of sucess.

I play both and I think they both have their own merits. Just two different kinds of beasts. In terms of $ / hr it's better to play turbos because you can multitable and play more in a less amount of time and thus have a chance to win more. I agree with kidpoker about the buy ins. The strategy is pretty simple, fold fold fold fold and then push your strong hands aggressively. You'll either accumulate a big chip advantage or bust out and join another one. It's kind of like auto pilot poker. Regular tournaments are great if you want a more relaxed pace and allow you to maneuver and be more creative. You can really work on fundamentals in these more so than turbos.

re: Turbo or Regular? poker Well, i very rarely play SNGs. When i do, id prefer them to be turbo. I think the game speed is faster since the players have more sense of urgency since they know the blinds will be rising soon. I tend to go in with same game plan in every sng or mtt. I try to make the best decisions possible. I do not like turbo mtts though, because i never seem to have success in those. It all depends on the player. GL!

Regular: TAG favored, Low luck factor, less $/hour Turbo: LAG favored, High luck factor, more $/hour If you are good, you can beat the regulars more often, but it will take longer. It's a tradeoff, sort of like single tabling vs. multitabling.

I think you hit on an important point about opening up your game and that is probably a good thing for you. Just be aware that if you go too far from your comfort zone/playing sytle, you may make unprofitable mistakes. Small steps to refine your game will do you well. |
