Is trips a realy powerful hand or just a good loser

I most cases I have found trips to be a hand that loses far to offten. Most of the times I have trips I lose. But on the other hand I lose to trips quit offten.(nick you just got trips aginst me on an off day)
At the end of the day trips to me seems to be a loseing hand more offten then not.

Three of a kind are strong if they are played well and depending on the type of 3 of a kind.
1) Called a "set" = two in your hand matching the one on the board
2) Called "trips" = one in your hand matching two on the board.

With a set...
You really have to watch the flop, if there is a straight, or flush possiblility you have two choices, bet really hard (all in), or just call and hope that the draw doesn't come.

If the board is a nice rainbow with no straight draw, then I'd slow play them and try to maximize my winnings.

With trips.....

These are scary things. Somone could also hold trips and have a bigger kicker, or could make their set on a different card to full up a full house (this one will usually bust you).

How to play these properly I really couldn't give any rules. It all depends on who you are playing and your read.

Hey, it happens. Trips can be a nice way to take the hand, but its not too powerful at all.

You know when they can't have anything better, but when they can, either be prepared to call their bluff (or semi bluff) or fold that shit man.

there is a saying if you don't lose a lot of money when you have 3 of a kind and are beaten, then you weren't playing it with enough aggression

its fairly easy to see if there are straight or flush posabilities, or if there is a paired board there may be a full house as well

otherwise the only hand your going to lose too is a higher set

Ok, Nick I gess we need a new thread know when you've taken a bad beat and when you just got you ass kicked. So on that point.

A bad beat is when you lose the hand after you were leading on the flop.

I personally wouldn't count that as a bad beat.

I think if it's a 3 outer or below, then it can be counted as a bad beat. Otherwise, it's just a part of poker.

Trips is a powerful hand. Watch out for straights an flushes though. I find it is best to bet with trips. This way, you can charge a large amount of money from someone who has a good hand, but is drawing dead, such as top pair top kicker.

The key is to bet them if there is a draw on the board. Make your opponent pay to see the next card. Slowplaying here can really cost you.

My version :)

Hi all,
If i've got the set ( pair in hand ) on the flop I would put in at least half my chips so long as there isn't 3 suited cards out there, if it's the other way around, trips ( only one in hand ) then I see how the betting is going and hope for a full house or even the 4 of a kind. I've won a lot of hands with trips/set, probably about 10% ended with the fullhouse.
Had some great poker play today at pacific, best hand of the day? I had A6 and the flop came out A66, unreal, went all-in and got 2 callers, didn't matter either way but the river gave me the 4th 6 ( more namecalling ) a great win.
Be playing at Noble tomorrow and also trying that pokerhost out, that's if I can get in the freerolls, think there will be a lot there, mind you if they are running every 15 minutes should be able to get in one or two, see you all there, good luck

I dont think much more could be added to this. Trips is a pretty good hand, but you have to watch out for people with higher kickers or full houses. Sets are good too but if you have a medium level set, you have to gauge the strengths of the other hands playing against you. If someone made a big raise preflop its possible that they flopped a higher set. If youre set is low card on the board you might have to think twice before pushing in an assload of chips. Hopes this helps a little.

Trips are a very good hand If you know How to play em,

For instence If you hit trips on hte flop and theres three cardsw of a different suit, then In this case I would bet a lil bit,

If theres 2 cards suited on the flop I myself would slow play the set just because theres no reason to try and bluff them oudda the pot cause your best chance is theyll miss the flush, or not catch the straight.

If your good at noticing these things youll win with trips everytime!!!!

i agree that if you pay attention you will know when your trips are good. if there is a one card straight on the board then you just have to suck it up and accept your set may not stand up

Most of the time i get lowly pocket pairs i simply call and pray for trips if i get trips i normally do not hesitate to push the pot especially in a small table...

Well, trips isn't the best hand! It goes on like pokerstars! I will catch trips there and I will always get beat by river. Same thing goes with AA at pokerstars I'd say that hand wins about 22% of the time. It's almost like you want to fold AA!

Trips are only a solid hand if you have a good kicker, something like an 8 will prolly get you beat 90% of the time in a 9 person room
