Tournament versus Date night
Quick advice.. Don't start a long tournament that will end up being ended because you have to leave for a date. I was playing (started with 500+players, 52 finish in the money). I am playing and shaving, brushing etc, and watching the hands. Finally, I know I am well into the tourney but have to go. Next decent hand, I figure, go all in and if I hit I may make the money. Well, AQ suited and I go all in. Miss it totally and finish with the little banner that reads "you finished in 54th place" If I had taken 10 seconds to see where I stood, I could have skipped the all in and made the money.... Bottom line, you may multi-task at multi-tables.. but a hot date does place a distraction on your proper line of thought

EV Calculation
I hope that you made a proper assessment of your situation. In the post we didn't have enough information to assess your actions. If you update with the following information then we could probably aid you in your calculations:
1) Buy in of tourney 2) Prize Pool and Payout Structure 3) Stack size, and rough position it puts you in 4) Hottness of Date 5) Easyness of Date: Expected Action recieved 6) Their level of acceptance of lateness, and just how late 7) Do they fulfill any of the life checklist items: Twins, Model, Little person, etc. Given this information I'm certain many poker/life coach experts could come forth and give you the proper value of your decision in Sklansky bucks. |

If single:
The amount of expected success in a tournament is inversely proportional to the hotness quotient of the date. If she is hot, your attention span will not be on poker. If married: The amount of expected success in a tournament is divided by the desire for the wife to attend said social function. Your attention span is good, but the incessant nagging will ultimately put you on tilt and lose. |

If you know you'll get a piece then forget the tourney-go for the real thing. If it's not a sure thing try telling her you're running late or car trouble or something but show up with flowers so she thinks you went to the trouble to get them too and she'll care less that you were late. DONT TELL HER YOU WERE PLAYING POKER!!! Focus on making her the main thing in your life for that night then knock the bottom out of it.

If she's hot, but not understanding about being that far in a tourney, you don't need her anyway! It depends on a lot of factors. Is this a first date? Or is this further on down the line? Does she know you play poker? Talk to her next time before abandoning a tournament that you've invested your time in. If she's worth it, she will understand!

Its all good.. you have your priorities straight! There will always be "anouther" tournament... you may only this one chance to make memories with a friend or soulmate. Enjoy it while you can. But you really should introduce her to poker.. I started learning playing strip ![]() |

If it's a wife, you have to find balance! Don't drop out of the tourney because you fear nagging. Doing something out of fear is so bad and disrespectful. Drop out because you made an obligation to your wife and you love and respect her enough to follow through with it and because you would prefer to keep your marriage spiced up with things like date night. (Snow - your advice surprises me, not in a good way, lol. If you screw up then the right thing to do (and to show you are not a selfish person) is to make a good apologetic gesture, like bringing her some flowers.) *Question: If you had a date lined up - why even enter a tournament in the first place? And please don't say because you didn't expect to do well! No point ever entering if you don't expect to do well! |

You may have missed my attempt at humor Storm.I will try to make it funnier next time.BTW flowers die anyway My wife will likely vouch that I was on time or called and was apologetic the few times I may have run late. I even planted flowers in front of her apartment and did her initials in different colored flowers for her! Snow ![]() |
