Team Poker

An idea...

The other day I played a freeroll with a friend, I was on table xxx he was on table yyy we were observing our mutual tables while we were playing.

We were also on the phone and narrating our hole cards and just basically talking strategy and options and pointing stuff out to each other.

We were not at the same tables so there was no cheating involved.

My question is have any of you done this before? There are certainly some merits to playing buddy poker. Especially if your friend is better or just a good poker player.

It's one thing to post hands and talk about them afterwards on a forum.

It's another to be getting some live feedback while your playing and having your skill and perception '' boosted'' by a better player live in the heat of the moment, kind of like having an instructor in the copilots seat.

I'm not advocating collusion (as the two would have to stop chatting if they ended up on the same table) or having the better player say dump this or raise that, just a poker discussion where one guy notices something about an opponent's action you didnt or vice versa and it gets burned into your brain live while its beeing put into practice as opposed to looking it over ''cold'' afterwards.

What about one person per hand? Talking to someone else about your hand before its conclusion is against most sites T&C.

I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Alot of ppl use team viewer to get help on their game. As long as you guys are not at same table and sharing hands I think its fine.

If it's okay or not I don't. If you want to know what I got you gotta pay. If you let him know how you play you might give him too much info then end up heads up with him.

One of the live tables I play at doesn't enforce the one player per hand rule. I'm ussually pretty vocal about it, but online it's different, it's masked. You could be up against 3 people sitting at a computer, collaborating, alternating hands, generally it's frowned upon, and some sites might have something against it in their usage regulations and policies.

But there's no way to tell. You depend on the integrity of your opponents and your own ability.

However its important to note I am not advocating team poker so to speak as a way to win more with the help of your friends as opposed to winning by playing alone but rather the educational/improvement aspect of having a copilot so to speak.

I am asking this question with 2 points in mind.

1) Beeing ''coached'' as a way to improve your game and NOT as a way to immediately make more money (allthough the two go hand in hand...)

2) The main difference beeing getting live action feedback as opposed to looking at the hands afterwards. To me it saves a lot of time as you are killing 2 birds with one stone and in my case at least I learn better by '' doing '' as opposed to reviewing and often we'r too lazy or busy to go through a thorough analysis at a later time.

It stands to reason that no coaching or colluding would be allowed if 2 players were at the same table. I'm throwing this idea out there just to get peoples views on a method of learning which can supplement the de facto ways players usually do things ( reviewing hh's, creating databases etc...)

Most live games and online sites will NOT allow this.
Hellmuth was coaching Shulman at the WSOP Main Event but he couldn't come down to discuss the hands with him.
It is one of the reasons phones, pages text messages etc are not allowed at the table

On many occasion I have been on the phone or IM'ing with buddies playing online BUT it is for trash talking, bragging and general conversation. We never discuss our hands or opponents hands.

I did it before too. But in the same table, that helps a lot if you have a friend involved. Maybe you dont got the chance to explode in your chips and be leader, but to survive till the prices its good!

The Aussie Millions (and several of the other tournament series run at Crown in Melbourne) regularly have "team" events - basically a two-player team enters the event, one person starts playing while the other waits on the rail and they change places every half hour or something, playing the same stack.

Not what you're talking about per se, but another approach to making poker a "team" game.

UMmmm.. finding or creating the 'loopholes' is THE way to get into the mindset of justifying cheating. There is a reason there are 'de facto' methods. They have been developed over many years and are approved of by the honest, serious poker players. Everyone wants instant gratification ... but the old saying about rewarding hard work holds true for honest people.

I find many on here (and other online sources) believe that your form of cheating is OK "online". It's a 'way of life'. It is also one of the single biggest reasons I will never deposit online. Those who use any methods other than their own individual ability to play poker to win money are cheaters in my book.

Cardschat is starting a team/league event shortly. As long as it is KNOWN that people are playing teams against teams, then it's really cool ... and certainly another fun aspect.

I would not have a problem with it at all,but it's not me it's the rules.I mean yes it's a mtt FREE ROLL an i wouldn't care if you told me you where doing this but some people would.So in the future just try to obey the rules i quess.

there are many chat rooms on forums where players talk about there cards while playing. I dont mind at all. But I am sure if theres a way to cheat its being done. I dont think any chat programs should be allowed while playing.
