Taking my bankroll forward Hi all, yet another bankroll thread Most of my poker playing has been live games at my local casino, but recently I've decided I want to play online a bit more. There's a few reasons for this but there's probably not much point going into them. I've obviously played online before, but it was only for a bit of fun so it included things like playing stakes I can't afford, etc - the small amount of money I put in wasn't an issue to me. This was on party poker and I managed to bust it all, but as I say, I wasn't really bothered - for the small amount that was in there I couldn't be bothered cashing it out, and I wanted to move to pokerstars. So, on Poker Stars I deposited $100 with a decision that I wanted to make something of it following proper BRM. This being said, I started out at $5 SNGs, which was possibly a bit too high, but at this point I wasn't bothered because of the small amount of money at stake. After playing pretty infrequently I'm now up to $375, just from playing the $5 SNGs. I'm still on these as I want to be able to afford 40 buyins before I move up to the $10 SNGs. My question at this point is how much longer should I continue playing SNGs? I'm interested in playing ring games, but until now there doesn't seem to be much point. When I hit the magic $400 number I have the option of continuing with the SNGs, or moving to nl$10 - but I'm not sure which is best. The $5 SNGs have been easy so far, with plenty of bad players, but I imagine as the stakes go up so does the quality of play. My main concern with the SNGs is I don't think they're a good tool for improving my game. The play in them is rather basic, tight early, steal steal steal late. But on the other hand, I can't see nl$10 requiring anything but simple play either. I do plan on making the transistion at some point, but for now which should I do? a) move over to nl$10. b) stick with SNGs until I get to $1000 then move to nl$25 Any thoughts and comments greatly appreciated

Dude I did the same thing on UB about 3 years ago. Deposited $90, played the $5 SNGs, and next thing I knew I had about $400. But poker was really a minor hobby back then, and the game has changed online dramatically (imo) since that time period. If you're making money ... just move up a level - you have a good formula with proven results. From what I saw at UB, PP, and PS, the game is just about identical at $10 sng than it is at $5. If you need a change of pace (we all do!) sure go ahead and play a big MTT or $10nl cash game (or $25nl if you are cheeky).

Basically I'd say play whichever one you enjoy more. You can make money in both, but they require different skill sets and they are different games. If you enjoy ring more, you can work on your ring game and do that. If you enjoy sngs more, just stick with that.

re: Taking my bankroll forward poker I started out with $5 SNGs (non-turbo) myself. I kept moving up whenever I had 20 buy-ins for the new level. Since I was playing at OnGame back then, I had to stop at the $200 level because those tournaments just wouldn't fill. That was when I moved over to cash games. And I must warn you: they're a completely different beast. There are two main differences: -> the stacks are much deeper -> you have infinite time to "beat the table" because the blinds stay the same You're gonna have to adapt to these things, and that takes practice. Otherwise your formula for winning SNGs is not going to translate over into beating cash games.
