Suggested poker books to read

Hi all,

I'm a bit curious as to the books that other members have read and found useful to their poker game. For myself, I've read An Education of a Poker Player by Herbert O Yardley. This is a very old book but I think it's a great read for a novice player. It teaches you the importance of playing very tight and has some entertaining stories. (it was also recommended by the online friend who more or less taught me the right way to play) The second book I've read is Dan Harrington's Vol 1 book. I found this to be another excellent book and it also helped me tighten up my game and improve my hand selection.

I'm now looking to add to my library of readings. I'm certainly going to get Harrington's Vol 2 book because I found the first so helpful. My other thought is to get TJ Cloutier's book since it focuses on Omaha and I've found myself liking that game MUCH more than Hold'em lately. I also wanted to get peoples view on Sklansky's books. I noticed that there are some posts on his books but I've read some negative reviews to his book (Theory of Poker) on the Full Tilt boards. A positive is that Harrington refers to the book quite a bit but I"m not sure if that's because it's good or that they both used the same publishing company.

I am also in the process of reading Dan Harrington's book. I have Super System I and II and I just purchased The Theory of Poker which is good reading.

I also have Caro's book on Poker Tells, but I haven't read that one yet.

I noticed that there are chapter discussions on the Theory of Poker book in other areas of this forum.

There is also a Review section on this site that discusses books etc.

I've only read both of the Harrington books(which were fantastic) and lots of countless poker articles in magazines, etc but I'm debating whether to get more books, or just to carry on with the knowledge I learnt from Harrington. Problem is, my brain doesnt hold too much info, so if I read another book or two, I'll forget what Harrington wrote!

Ive read supersystem vol1, harrington on hold and Mike Caros book of tells! Harrington on hold'em is easily the best book although if you play alot of live poker i would definetly recomend Mike Caro's book, very very helpfull when trying to get reads on opponents

This is not a book but I recently watched the Final Table Poker DVD with Phil Gordon. A very good DVD esp for me who am trying to improve my game.

I'll defintely check out those books... can I get this at any borders or barnes and noble?

I watched the DVD too, very informational. Harrington on Holdem also helped me very much, helped my play ver ymuch. Also, many articles on the internet about poker, and poker forums, which helped me improve my play.

Cloutier is a great player, but from what I've heard his books are horrible (just going on word of mouth though - I've not actually read any of them so take this with a pinch of salt).

I recommend Ray Zee's H/L Split Poker for Advanced Players if you're interested in some O8 literature.

Also ToP is great, and anyone who thinks otherwise is very silly. I recommend reading more other books first though, as ToP serves as more of a complementary read than anything else.

I bought and have read and re-read his book with Tom McEvoy Championship Holdem Hands.
The book was great, but the thing i noticed was how Tight/passive it suggested you play.
Though the only other book i've read on NLHE was SS2, so the contrast is very high.
I think he is just about the best MTT player out there (TJ) but his book was surprisingly kind of passive...he suggests playing a very tight style, which is generally right. But every hand he analyzed he seemed to point out every single hand that an opponent could have that would beat you and warned to play cautious because of it. Very strange, but a decent book nonetheless. I think it was worth the $30 i paid for it.

"Getting Started in Hold 'em" by Ed Miller is an excellent read.

Just a little point which might make you laugh....

whenever i've just read a chapter/s of a poker book, i might be in a room, all confident and ready with my new info and knowledge, try it, and get battered!! so i go back to my usual game...

but... you see a move or strange play, at some point in the game ... which you read about earlier, and act on it..

i read a lot on mike caros tells, its suprising how many tells he mentions, also apply online.

UUuuuhh... Theory Of poker is by far the best read out there... Then comes LowLimitHoldEm by malmuth, and sklansky (if you're playing online this is a must read), Texas Hold'em for advanced players is right up there too... SS2 is good, reading it now
