strategy when having Poor luck...

There are days when you cannot get a pair, and when you get paint the kickers are lower then fingers on one hand. Sit and sit and sit, wait don't panic the odds are, that you will eventually get that KJ, AQ, QQ, KK, or even AA. The thing is what do you do to keep the panic down; put on music, get the IPod on, sew, draw, read, glance over and watch for your cards but don't concentrate on what other players are doing. When your cards come you will be able to make intelligent calculations and bet appropriatelly. Play your hand and not the others bets, bets don't win cards do.

...You really dont want to be doing anything that'll keep you from observing the table. You should watch what other players are doing because this will provide you with a lot of key information. I think that when you're watching a table and not playing a hand, you notice more.

...Im not sure Im following here. Sure a strong hand will win more often than it loses, but you can't say that a bet doesn't win. If you bluff someone with a reraise and get them to fold, then your bet just won you the pot, right? There are times where its nice to have a good hand to back you up, but you can also win a lot of pots by betting the right amount into the right people-but how will you know who those are if you arent observing and paying attention?

Where else do other players give advice on how to beat them at poker? Nice response Phil.

I can't tell you the amount of times I have represented a hand that got the other player to lay down their hand.

For example, if there is a flush and a straight draw on board and I think the other player is betting just top pair, I will call (with the correct pot odds) and if either of those cards hits, I rep that I caught it. 9 times out of ten they fold.

I think the OP was honest in its aim to provide advice for other players, its just that sometimes they need a little correction-and there is nothing wrong with that. The OP made a good point early in the post about not panicking when you're card dead and what you can do when it happens.

Shoshoni: Observation is a big key in poker if you want to do well. Cards, chips, and bets are just a small part of the game. Information you gain from observing other players-their styles, how they play, etc will help you much more in the long run that if you just play your cards dealt.

The only strategic move you could do is...have patience!!!Sooner or later your luck shall change!!!

+1 on philthy's advice.

When I was very new to the game, I used to surf other websites while "waiting for my cards".

It didn't take me long to realize that I was not paying attention to one of the most important parts of the game ........ what the other players are doing.

I also learned quickly that doing nothing but waiting for your KK's or AA's is a losing proposition, as they will be cracked often enough especially if played poorly.

Playing those hands right (along with that 72o) relative to what else is happening at the table is where I think success lies. My humble opinion.

Not paying attention to the table is not playing! That's why it is hard for me to understand how do people play 4,8 and even 12 simultaneous games... What's the point??

Another small advice I once heard from a Poker Pro is that you have to know when to fold (!) i.e. do not let your ego get control and go all in only because he re-raised you - Do not spend bad money over good money!

BTW, their is a saying: 'Play the opponent, not the cards'.

Sometimes its easier said than done/you feel more comfortable if you have a big hand to back you up, but its very true. Im not at the point where I do it consistently but if I pay attention, I might be able to bet someone off of their draw or small pair. Or I can represent a big hand in position when I have rags. Situations like these shouldn't be passed up.

i personaly like to multi table so if one table is dry for me then there is usually another 1 that is hitting some cards.

Or you could do the opposite and just go all in every hand. That's sure to change your luck.

yer i don't think most ppl's problems are with lack of top hands, it is more with flopping top set and losing to a backdoor flush. And unfortunately, going for the Ipod at that moment might just mean that you won't have a functional Ipod anymore.

when I'm running shitty, I just play a bunch of micro limit HU NLHE games to see as many hands as possible and hopefully speed up the bad run of cards so I can jump back into my regular games

When having poor luck i tend to just be patient, regardless if i never see a pp. I can see where you can get frustrated when being sooooo patient & still not coming out w/ a decent hand but it's the only thing to do really. When you get ss then you have to pick your spot & use ss power. GL on the tbls...

Keep playing solid poker and keep paying attention to your opponents. Eventually the numbers will come back in your favor, variance can be a PITA sometimes, but if you slog through it with solid play you will come out of it.

You have to pay attention to the other players at the table. That way you know who is playing loose and who is playing tight. Thus you have a better feel for how much to bet or raise or call for that matter. I noticed something in the WSOP events this year. Some of the pros will listen to music early in a tournament or some will even read a book. However, when it gets down to in the money time and especially the final table. They are all business, no music and no books. However, you can not stop Mike M.'s mouth.

My poor luck today came from mistyping the amount I wanted to bet in a tournament. I had AQs mid position and raised a whopping 960 chips instead of the 90 I wanted to raise. I got reraised all in and with less than half of what I bet I had to call. Went up against QQ. Got knocked out.
I don't know how to cope with that other than calling myself a clumsy stupid ****.
