Single tabling or multiple tabling?

A lot of players like to play multiple tables. Some play as many as 20 tables at a time. If you play multiple sessions at a time you will find many advantages but also many disadvantages.
When you play your first online poker games, you will find it hard enough to play just one table. Every player needs to get used to the online poker room’s setup. Normally it will take a new player several sessions to get used to the mechanics of the poker rooms. As time goes by, new players start learning the ins and outs of an online poker room’s software. By then, the new player might want to start playing two or three games at a time. Most of the times this will help clear the first deposit much faster. If by any chance this new player is a winning player, this could increase the winning rate as well. Experienced players tend to get bored by playing just a few games at a time. They often need more games for more action to make online poker fun. But no matter how experienced you are, you must always be careful not to play too many games at once.
There are players that will take on 5, 8, 10 or even 20 games at once! For each additional game you open you will lose a small edge. It’s impossible to be aware of every little detail of every game and sometimes these details are the difference between failure or success. You will have a tougher time, trying to identify and separate the fish from the sharks. This can also hurt your win rate. If you are playing stud for example, you will need to track what cards are dead and which cards are still alive. Having multiple games will prevent you from doing so in a successful way.
One important reason to limit the number of games is because you will slow down the pace of the games. You expose yourself to have your hand folded and maybe miss the opportunity of getting a big pot. You eventually slow your own pace and sacrifice a big part of the enjoyment of the game. Most online poker sites limit the number of games you are able to play. Some poker sites limit the number of games you can play to three tables, such is the case at RumblePoker. Some sites allow their players to play up to ten games. Others, like Poker Stars, allow their players to open as many tables as they want.
If you are starting to play poker, take it easy and try not to play more table than you can handle. It’s almost certain that you won’t get good results and it may also give you a wrong impression of online poker. Move up in the number of tables just as you would move up limits, very carefully.
