I have a question, I have been wondering about for a while .

How can one know when short term is over and the long term has started ?
I know that playing 1 game is short term but playing say 50 games ?
When does long term stop ?

Does any of this start over when the deck starts over because long term and short term doesnt know when the deck starts and stops ?

Just not sure how I should know if I am in long term from my short term .

Well it depends what youre on about...

short term cash success or loss could be a few thousand hands i wouldn't judge your BB/100 until you have played several 10' of thousands of hands!!

SNGS i would not say your ROI% is correct until you have played a couple thousand games at that specific game!

MTT's forget it the variance is huge you could be a sicko and have such a long streak of poor results in large field games...

I would say short term is when you finish a session in a daily basis say 1 day.

Long term is playing thousands of hands or playing in months or even years.

Personally I don't think you can compare these two with quantitative measurements. This hand, the last hand and next hand are all short term. The thing is short term and long term are concepts, not amounts. So instead its more than thoughts associated with each one. Short term are things that are happening in the now, recent past, or near future. Long term is the whole spectrum of everything you've done to get where you are and where you're going.

If that was the case then it would take thousands of hands to benifit from exploits.

Short term should be a good indicator of whether your a decent player if your winning, taking into account the manor of how you win.

Flips and cards running well count for nothing short term, however its about your decisions, money saved, valued extracted, being aware your picking up on vulnerable opponents.

If your a good player you will be aware of all of these.

If your not then your most likely still a slave to the cards.

I know when I'm playing well and when I'm running well, theirs a difference.
I'm not sure if its denial or people want to believe they are playing good and can't accept it might be luck, but most players
allow themselves to become blind

Short term and long term are both relative terms and the span of either of these depends on one's perspective.

It also depends on what goals one has set and what time frame one is looking at to achieve them. It may vary from one person to another. So everyone of us individually has different goals to achieve - similarly we have different time frames set to achieve these.

From one person to another short term can be ranging from one or handful of sessions to a week or maybe a month, a year or even more.

Example say there are 3 people say Rob, Raven and Bob.

Rob grinds 10 hours at the table everyday 6 days of the week. He wants to make x amount of profits this coming week. Similarly he is looking to make a certain profit by the end of three months.

Raven plays few sessions every week. She is set out to achieve at least x amount of profits by the end of three months and similarly by the end of the year she is hopeful that she'll make enough profits to buy a car.

Bob plays at the local casino every sunday and wants to set aside x amount of profit by the end of the year. Also he hopes that after five years he'll make enough profits from his weekend getaways so that he can buy a new property.

So for Rob short term is "a week" and long term is "three months". For Raven short term is "three months" and long term is "one year". For Bob short term is "one year" while long term is "Five years".

Different people having different perspectives. :icon_stud

Long term is almost infinite, as technically its theoretical.

IE,

If you have a hand where you have a straight and flush draw, say AKs, one a JQrag board. The other player has a Queen. You may be a favourite to win, and so getting your chips in, is a good play in the LONG RUN. However in the SHORT RUN, (this hand) you might whiff the turn and river and lose the pot... even though you were a favourite on the flop...

Hope that helps.. :)

To some, short means the first game they play. To others, short might mean six months of multi-tabling. The most relevant way to express the way I feel about it is that any bet you make should have a purpose. (the probability of being ahead of opponents or building a hand with odds in your favor: getting as much in the pot when you are ahead) That is a short term strategy in that it is a constant strategy. Results in the long term are your profits: that amount you win less dollars lost to variance. The profits are always long term and depending on whom you play will accumulate in the long run. So strategy and tactics are short term and results are long term
