A question about poker etiquette

When playing in ring games, if you get a nice tidy win off a hand, is it bad form to then leave the table without giving your opponent the chance to win it back from you ?

I really dont have a clue what the general concensus is on this one.

I'm not sure if there is a "general concensus". It comes down to personal choice, personnaly I would stay at least until the hand before my next bb. The other thing to ask yourself is, if they had won a big chunk of your stack, would they give you a chance to win it back?

Another thing I have heard is after a big win in ring games, you are now over the table max and have more of your money at risk. Some say to leave and go to another table and buy in for the max, thus protecting your bankroll.

In cash games you can come and go as you please, some won't like it but it's a fact of life.

When I win a big pot (which is rare), I try to play as little as hands as possible until I'm hit with the big blind. But usually I'm dealt aces or a big hand and then lose most of it.

I have asked this before, and I guess it is considered bad form.

Me? If someone asks me are you going to give me a chance to win my money back, I have to say why would I do that? I came here to take your money, I have it. Game over.

I do not think its is bad forum to leave after you have collected a large pot. If there is an ethical "code" that says you should, I have not heard of it.

It's like the Pirate's code. Its not really a "code" its more like "guidelines"... (my apologies to Captian Barbosa)

Common thought is that you should stick around at least one rotation to avoid getting your arse kicked in certain environments, or maybe just a few rude comments in others. The fake cell phone call sometimes works.. "Its my wife, she wants to have dinner now."

Its not really a matter of manners at a poker table. Your main goal when you sit down is to generate a profit from the hands that you've sat there patiently waited for. So once you get paid off and are satisfied with your winnings it is best to leave the table.( especially if your stack exceeds the max buy in.) By staying your just putting your hurting your own profitability.

I don't think it is bad form, if I win a tidy amount off of someone I am going to take my winnings and run. Why sit around and have the chance of giving it all back? Thats like winning a large amount off a slot machine and then you keep sitting at the same machine putting it all back in quarter by quarter till all the sudden you dont have any of it left.

Its your money and u can leave when ever you whant.
But if you leave for example on the button your making a mistake imo since your missing "free" hands.
I allways just wait until im UTG and then leave.

I play with my neighbors every other evening. Buy in is min $20 max $50, and we're usually 10-handed. I do fairly well, often winning between $40-$100 within an hour or so. We don't have a specific rule against leaving after huge pots, but when someone takes down a large pot and gets up I'll say something witty like "taking our money to go get us some beer!?!?" and it usually does the trick. We're neighbors and have been playing together for almost 2 years now, so I guess it's a little different

Yeh same with my friends. We play a STT now but before we used to do a cash game and we'd all agree to play until a certain time. If anybody did want to leave then it was nice of them to say, i'll be off in say 15mins or so.

Online, I would get up and walk away if I felt like it, and would not care if someone was angry, because I play at low stakes, I don't know any of my opponents and I agree with the 2 comments above:

1) It is my money I won. I may be pissed off if someone hit me and went, but thats tilt, not anything else

2) Would they stay and let me win it back if we were reversed? I don't have that much respect for anyone because, as I said, I just don't know them.

I agree with most, if it is a love game with friends I will let them know if I have to leave soon or something comes up. Online though, I usually am hitting and running most tables I go to. I double up, I am gone. No matter if it is the first or 100th hand

Its pretty high up on the level of douchebaggery to hit and run, to a certain degree - its not THAT bad online.

In my opinion if its online poker, hit and run is fine as there are thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of players that will take your spot. High stakes online its more of a gray zone, you see many of the same players and they will not take kindly to it, at all.

Live poker cashgames, you are an A grade douchebag if you hit and run, simple. At least wait a few more orbits before leaving if thats your goal. Plus even if you "run" with your money, where you gunna go? You wont be welcome playing poker, maybe another table? still classless and you will never earn any respect as a player. But if ur degen enough and dont need friends or to be socially accepted, hit and run to your hearts content.

I can just see a guy at a casino running table to table winning one hand at each. He would have 4-5 guys waiting for him outside when he "logged off" lol

Online you can leave whenever you want.

Here's one bit though:

Leaving the table and coming back with less chips (referred to as "going south") is considered bad etiquette.

I think PS has recently implemented a timer that will not let you "go south" and rebuy for less within a certain time frame.

Going to another table, as mentioned above, isn't bad though.

Personally I like being a big stack though. I understand some people benefit from limiting their risk, but for me, as far as I know, my playstyle is compatible with sitting with chips.

Your life is your life so stay or leave it is completely up to you. Why worry about whether or not the others will get upset? Do you really think they are worried about you getting upset? If you are at a table with friends and want them to stay friends I would stay for a few hands, but for the most part these are people you will never know so C'est la vie. Keep it for another time. We are all on here to win.

Well i hate when they do it to me, but hum...If i win a big pot (like i double up from 10$ to 20$), and i don't like risking it, yea i would leave before i hit the BB

I would leave because i've been up from 20$ to 40$, and then back to 15 or something because someone with a flush draw decides to make a big raise on me when i flop a Set, and we eventually go all in and i lose the 40$ i had, it happened and it didn't feel good, so i rather keep those 40 and go to another table :P

I don't think so, unless the players are your budds or in a land based game. Poker online is a dog eat dog, hit and run, or stay to long and give it back and then some.

I have to agree with most of the players on here and say goodbye to everyone when I hit a big pot. Especially when it's online in low ring games because most of those players change drastically everyday and there is a lot of bad players at those tables waiting to do the same thing to you.
If I am in a land based game, wherever, I let everyone know that I will be staying around for at least another 15 minutes or so because I just think that's the right thing to do. I'm not going to play stupid though for those 15 minutes because I had one thing in mind when I sat down to play and that was to WIN!!!

I gotta regroup and say something. Leaving the table when you get a big win only makes sense to me if you are doing it because there is something about the dynamic of deep stack play at that particular table.

But what i am hearing here is it is a method to preserve your gains. Only.

And I suppose that is OK if that works for you, but I gotta ask: Why?

Being the chipleader in a cash game does several positive things and a few negative ones.

In the plus category is does some pretty strong stuff for table image. I mean you got the chips somehow. You are either a badass or a complete luckordian. I am glad if folks believe EITHER of those two things about me at the table.

It gives you the power to stack anyone at the table when you have the nuts. In fact there are those rare and wonderful times when you get to take out 2 or three players at once. So when you are playing well it helps your implied odds.

The negative stuff is all about discipline.

If, when you are deep at a cash table you start thowing money around like a rock star trying to play every pot and win all the time you are making a mistake. That mistake has a name.

Well... it really is ANYTHING that changes the way you play in a negative direction. Losses, wins, or beer.

When you hit and run you have to go to the trouble of learning a whole new set of players. Some may argue that you get a clean slate at the new table too, being an unknown. *I* say it's not too bad to be known at a table as "the winner".

Leave when you want to.
If you are sitting out and attempting to leave and are asked "Are you gonna give me a chance to let me win my money back?"
Say "No, I'm giving you a chance to keep what you have left at the table"

Its just I've been having a sick run on Bodog lately and doubling my stack up quite a few times.

I just didnt want to pee everyone off by taking their money and legging it if you know what I mean, so what I do is sit on the table a couple of circuits fold and only play premium hands if I get them, before making a nice polite excuse that I've got to go..

No one seems to have objected so far..

Honestly though.... even if someone were to ask me to stick around (online) I'd still go to another table. Nobody's doing me any favors online, and there's no way that I'm going to try and make someone else happy. When I login to whatever poker client/s I'm going to be playing on... I've got one goal in mind: Win as much of YOUR money as I can. Nobody's ever taken my money, then given it back. I'm not gonna do it. No Sir!

Just watch Phil ivey on FTP.. He hits and runs every single time he plays. In smaller limits.. i would not worry about it, if your playing $100/$200 i would give a 10min warning, then leave

Hit and run, take no prisoners! It is a good way to play sometimes...

I don't leave just because Ive won a big pot tho, there may be good reasons to stick around (soft table, heater going on etc.), or to leave (wanna make supper, wanna count my chips and chill, whatever), but not usually simply because I won a pot.

Live play is different of course, especially home games.

that is the reason you play ring games to came and go as you please me personally I would leave the table because of my preset limmits. and buy in to anouther table.When I buy inn I have an amount I am going to stand with weather its in one minute or one hour.that is one of the luxuries of playing online.You can move from table to table with out sitting out.

Why would you give someone else a "chance to win it back"... you came to that table for one reason... to win money!

thats what is cool about online poker you can go to as many tables as you like at any time with no consequenses.

Its your choice. Sometimes if you feel like you need to protect your winning leave and buy back in at another table but if I'm running hot I really don't want to leave. I just try to play a little tighter in order to keep my winnings. Having a big stack does give you the means to take advantage of the big hands when they do come whereas if your short you limit the amount you can win..

What? Win over a million dollars is what not to do?

I do this every night.

You can't come back to the same table with less duckets than you left with for at least one hour in the casino's I play at.

You leave, when you want to, the question is " did the oppnent give you a chance to win your money back when you lose"? I don't think so. Everybody who plays on cashtables know what the risk is to play cash. I means, you can come when you want and you can go when you want.
